Sienna Cowl by All Knit Up Designs

What is Being Made

The Sienna Cowl is a versatile neck accessory designed by Sierra Kreun of All Knit Up Designs. This downloadable knitting pattern offers two size options to suit different preferences: Size 1 measures 22 inches in circumference by 18 inches deep, while Size 2 provides a roomier 33 inches in circumference by 18 inches deep. Both sizes are worked in the round to create a seamless, tubular cowl that can be worn as a cozy neck wrap or styled as a versatile layering piece.

Techniques and Construction

The Sienna Cowl is constructed using circular knitting techniques, worked in the round on circular needles to eliminate seaming and create a polished, professional finish. The pattern employs the mistake rib stitch pattern as its primary design element. Mistake rib is a reversible textured stitch that creates visual interest on both sides of the fabric, making it an excellent choice for a cowl that will be viewed from multiple angles. The pattern begins with a cast-on worked in the round, and the cowl is completed after working the required number of rounds to reach the specified depth of 18 inches.

Stitches Used

The Sienna Cowl utilizes fundamental knitting stitches that make it accessible to beginner-level knitters:

  • Knit (K): The basic knit stitch forms the foundation of the fabric
  • Purl (P): Purl stitches are combined with knit stitches to create texture
  • Mistake Rib: This stitch pattern alternates knit and purl stitches in a strategic sequence across two rounds. Round 1 works K4, P4, K2, P2, while Round 2 shifts the pattern to P2, K2, P2, K4, P2. This offset creates a subtle, reversible ribbed texture that differs from traditional rib patterns

Materials Required

Yarn: The pattern calls for either 274 yards or 546 yards of sport weight yarn, depending on which size you choose. Size 1 requires 274 yards (251 meters), while Size 2 requires 546 yards (500 meters). The sample photographed was knit in Cascade Epiphany, a luxurious blend of 60% alpaca, 20% cashmere, and 20% silk, which provides softness and drape ideal for a cowl worn close to the neck. Sport weight yarn creates a fabric with good stitch definition that showcases the mistake rib pattern beautifully.

Needles: The pattern specifies US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles. Size 1 uses a 16-inch (40 cm) circular needle, while Size 2 uses a 24-inch (60 cm) circular needle. Circular needles are essential for working in the round and creating the seamless construction that defines this cowl.

Additional Notions: One stitch marker is needed to mark the beginning of each round, and a darning needle is required for weaving in ends after completion.

Gauge and Finishing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches by 32 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in mistake rib stitch and measured after blocking. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished dimensions. Blocking the completed cowl helps even out the stitches and allows the fabric to relax into its final shape and drape.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent project for knitters new to circular knitting or those seeking a straightforward cowl pattern. The mistake rib stitch, while creating beautiful texture, uses only basic knit and purl stitches, and the pattern's simple structure requires minimal shaping or complex techniques.
