Product Description

This pattern features a V neck, short sleeve t-shirt, designed with panels either side and joined across the centre, front and back. Basically the shirt is join-as-you-go, with only minimal sewing together. The t-shirt is made using Paintbox DK cotton as this is perfect for clothing.

I have kept the stitching plain as there is plenty to do regarding changes in size and joining. The pattern features five different sizes, with three different arm sizes. The pattern includes lots of pictures to help with stitch placement and the description of techniques. You will download one pattern that is colour coded for all sizes. The pattern is listed as Advanced as it requires the ability to handle a pattern with mulitple sizes, increase and decreases.

What is Being Made

The Side Panel V Neck T-Shirt is a men's crocheted garment designed by SeyhallCrochetDesign. This downloadable crochet pattern produces a fitted t-shirt featuring a distinctive V-neckline and contrasting side panels. The garment is available in five sizes ranging from Small to XXL, with chest measurements from 92cm (36 inches) to 120cm (47 inches) and lengths from 65cm (25.5 inches) to 72cm (28.5 inches). The design incorporates color blocking through the use of multiple yarn colors strategically placed at the side panels.

Techniques and Construction

This advanced-level crochet project employs structured shaping techniques to achieve a tailored fit. The pattern relies heavily on precise stitch counts to create accurate sizing across all five garment sizes. Tension matching is emphasized as critical to the success of this project, with instructions to adjust hook size if necessary to achieve the specified stitch count. The V-neckline is created through strategic decreasing, while the side panels are formed through color changes and careful stitch placement to create visual interest and dimension.

Stitches Used

The Side Panel V Neck T-Shirt utilizes fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches to construct the garment:

  • Double crochet (dc) - the primary stitch forming the fabric base
  • Single crochet (sc) - used for finishing edges and creating structure
  • Chain (ch) - used for foundation and spacing
  • Slip stitch (sl st) - for joining rounds and finishing
  • Decrease stitches - including dc two together (dc2tog), dc three together (dc3tog), and sc two together (sc2tog) for shaping the V-neckline and armholes
  • Reverse single crochet (rev sc) - for decorative edge finishing

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Side Panel V Neck T-Shirt is designed to be worked with DK weight yarn and a 4mm crochet hook. The pattern calls for Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in three coordinating colors. Stormy Grey (color 405) serves as the primary color, with yardage requirements of 6 skeins for Small/Medium sizes, 6 skeins for Large/XL sizes, and 7 skeins for XXL. Red Wine (color 416) and Dolphin Blue (color 437) are used as accent colors for the side panels, requiring 3-4 skeins depending on size. The use of cotton yarn provides breathability and drape suitable for a summer t-shirt construction.

Tension and Gauge

Achieving proper tension is essential for this advanced pattern. The specified gauge is 10 rows by 16 double crochet stitches equals 10cm by 10cm (approximately 4 inches by 4 inches). Crocheters are instructed to swatch and measure carefully before beginning, adjusting hook size up or down as needed to match this tension precisely, as the pattern relies on stitch counts rather than measurements to achieve the correct finished sizes.

Additional Equipment

Beyond the crochet hook and yarn, the pattern requires a large eye needle for weaving in ends and a set of stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points throughout construction.
