Shih Tzu Crochet Applique Pattern by Kerri's Crochet
What is Being Made
This is a downloadable crochet pattern for creating a Shih Tzu applique design. The pattern produces a small decorative crocheted representation of a Shih Tzu dog that can be used as an applique to embellish other projects. The design is available in three different size options, ranging from small to large, allowing crafters to customize the finished dimensions based on their yarn weight and hook size preferences.
Design Sizes and Finished Dimensions
- Large Shih Tzu: 10cm x 15cm (4" x 6") when made with 8 ply yarn and a 3mm hook
- Medium Shih Tzu: 7cm x 11.5cm (2.75" x 4.5") when made with 4 ply crochet cotton and a 1.5mm hook
- Small Shih Tzu: 5.5cm x 8cm (2" x 3") when made with 2 ply crochet cotton and a 1mm hook
Crochet Stitches and Techniques Used
This intermediate-level pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches and techniques. The pattern employs chain stitches to create the foundation of the design, slip stitches for joining and shaping, double crochet stitches for building structure and density, half treble crochet stitches for varied texture, and treble crochet stitches for creating lighter, more open areas. The pattern uses the UK crochet terminology system. The applique is constructed by crocheting individual components—such as the head—and then assembling them together using a sewing needle and thread.
Materials and Tools Required
The pattern calls for crochet cotton or wool yarn. The designer used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush or Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton in the following colors: (406) Soft Beige, (105) Bridal White, (162) Black Coffee, and (110) Black. A crochet hook is required; the specific hook size depends on the desired finished size—1mm for small, 1.5mm for medium, or 3mm for large. Additional materials include scissors for cutting yarn, a darning needle for weaving in loose ends, and a sewing needle with sewing thread for stitching the completed components together to form the final applique.
Pattern Features
This pattern includes detailed abbreviations for all crochet terminology, making it accessible to intermediate crocheters. A free video tutorial is available on the designer's YouTube channel, providing visual guidance alongside the written instructions. The pattern uses lace-weight yarn options, allowing for delicate, detailed work. The modular construction approach—building the head and other components separately before assembly—makes the pattern manageable and allows for customization of sizing through yarn weight selection.
