Shells Mitts by Fiona Langtry
What Is Being Made
The Shells Mitts are a pair of short crochet gloves featuring decorative shell stitches along the back of the hands. This design by Fiona Langtry creates a cute, wearable accessory with a textured back and a flat palm side for comfortable wear. The pattern is sized for medium hands and is written for both right-handed and left-handed versions to ensure proper fit and construction.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. The pattern employs US crochet terms throughout. Key techniques featured in the Shells Mitts include Foundation Double Crochet and Linked Double Crochet, which create a solid foundation and structured base for the gloves. The distinguishing feature is the use of shell stitches positioned up the back of each hand, creating a decorative texture while the palm side remains flat for practical wear and comfort.
Stitches Used
- Foundation Double Crochet
- Linked Double Crochet
- Shell stitches
Materials Required
To complete the Shells Mitts, you will need approximately 100 meters of DK weight yarn (also known as #3 weight yarn). The recommended tool is a 5.0mm/H crochet hook. A yarn needle is also required for finishing and weaving in ends.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with more complex stitch combinations and shaping techniques.
