Product Description
I've made this cover to keep my circular needles in it, but you can use it in many different ways (to store crochet hook or as an e-reader cozy). It has a cute sheep on the front and it fastens with a button on the back. My version measures 7.5" (19cm) × 4.5"(11,5cm).
P.S. It's my first knitting pattern and I'm sure it's very much influenced by how I'm writing my crochet designs, so please bear with me:)
Sheep Circular Needles Holder by Justyna Kacprzak
What Is Being Made
The Sheep Cover is a versatile storage accessory designed primarily as a circular needles holder, though it can be repurposed for multiple uses including storing crochet hooks or serving as an e-reader cozy. This downloadable knitting pattern features a cute sheep motif on the front and fastens securely with a button closure on the back. The finished dimensions measure 7.5 inches (19 centimeters) wide by 4.5 inches (11.5 centimeters) tall, making it a compact and portable accessory for fiber crafters.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several foundational knitting techniques to create texture and visual interest. The pattern combines basic stitch work with colorwork elements to construct the sheep design on the front of the cover. Button attachment is required for the closure mechanism on the back. The construction allows for versatile storage applications, demonstrating practical design thinking for crafters who need organized solutions for their tools.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch: Created by knitting all stitches on the right side and purling all stitches on the wrong side, this fundamental stitch provides a smooth, classic fabric base for the cover.
- Moss Stitch: An alternating knit and purl pattern worked over four rows (rows 1 and 4 work *knit 1, purl 1* repeats; rows 2 and 3 work *purl 1, knit 1* repeats), creating a textured, bumpy surface.
- Special Stitch 3: A custom stitch pattern that alternates knit and purl stitches in a specific sequence across four rows, adding additional textural variation to the design.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern is worked with DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn weight suitable for creating fabric with good stitch definition. The primary yarn is 100% acrylic DK yarn, chosen for durability and ease of care. The sheep motif incorporates green, blue, and gray acrylic yarn for the sheep design itself, while white fluffy novelty yarn is used to create the characteristic woolly texture of the sheep on the front cover, adding tactile appeal and visual charm to the finished piece.
Gauge and Needle Requirements
The pattern is gauged at 18 stitches and 28 rows equaling 4 inches by 4 inches (10 centimeters by 10 centimeters) when worked in stockinette stitch using 4mm (US size 6) needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for creating a holder that properly fits circular needles and maintains the intended finished dimensions.
