Product Description
This Cowl was designed to wear with the Shameless Newsboy, but it is clearly a stand alone piece. The structure of the stitches does not offer a relaxed, or floppy cowl. This is an amazing cowl to fill the top of a jacket, to brace against the elements, and look good doing it.
Shameless Cowl by Becky Dirlam
Project Overview
The Shameless Cowl is a structured crochet cowl designed by Becky Dirlam of Indulge Crochet Designs. While created as a companion piece to the Shameless Newsboy, this cowl functions beautifully as a standalone accessory. Unlike relaxed or floppy cowl styles, the Shameless Cowl features a structured construction that provides excellent coverage and support. This design is ideal for layering over jacket necklines and offering protection against the elements while maintaining a polished, intentional appearance.
What Is Being Made
This project creates a fitted cowl—a neck accessory that drapes around the shoulders and upper torso. The structured stitch pattern ensures the cowl maintains its shape rather than sagging, making it a practical layering piece for cooler weather while delivering visual appeal.
Crochet Techniques and Stitch Construction
The Shameless Cowl employs a variety of intermediate-level crochet techniques to achieve its distinctive structure. The pattern utilizes post stitches, which are foundational to creating texture and dimensional fabric.
- Post Stitches: Front Post double crochet (FPdc) and Back Post double crochet (BPdc) stitches form the core of the pattern, creating raised, textured columns that contribute to the cowl's structured appearance.
- Bobble Stitch: A special stitch technique that involves multiple yarn overs and loops drawn through the hook simultaneously, creating dimensional bobble textures throughout the design.
- Decrease Techniques: The pattern incorporates Front Post double crochet two together (FPdc2tog) and double crochet 3 together (dc3tog) for shaping and stitch reduction.
- Foundation and Basic Stitches: Chain stitches (ch), single crochet (sc), and double crochet (dc) provide the foundational structure and base rows for the more complex stitch patterns.
Yarn and Materials
The Shameless Cowl is worked in worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight option that provides good stitch definition and drape. The pattern calls for a J/10/6.0mm crochet hook, which pairs appropriately with worsted weight yarn to create the specified gauge. Additional supplies include a stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats, scissors, a tape measure for checking dimensions, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 12 stitches by 6½ rows over 4 inches in the stitch pattern. Achieving proper gauge is essential for this structured cowl to fit correctly and maintain its intended shape and drape. A special swatch is recommended, beginning with a chain of 22 stitches followed by double crochet stitches to establish accurate gauge before beginning the main project.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, the Shameless Cowl requires familiarity with post stitches and specialty techniques like bobble stitches and multiple-stitch decreases. Crocheters should be comfortable reading pattern abbreviations and executing stitch variations before beginning this project.
