Product Description

The design Sügis (Estonian for “autumn”) combines traditional Estonian stitch patterns with a modern look.

The sweater is worked seamlessly in rounds in one piece from the top-down using elements of the contiguous method. Additional body increases are worked in the upper body to improve the fit. The stranded section is framed by Latvian braids.

The pattern provides optional bust darts for those of you who are on the busty side.

After the sleeves are divided, the lower body is continued with pleats in the middle of front and back, and then it is worked straight down. (The pattern provides also instructions to work the sweater without pleats.)

The hi-lo hem is worked using short rows. Sleeves and body feature another small stranded pattern before the ribbing.

Sügis Sweater by Frl. Staedtisch

What is Being Made

The Sügis sweater is a seamless, top-down knitted pullover that combines traditional Estonian stitch patterns with contemporary design elements. The name "Sügis" means "autumn" in Estonian, reflecting the pattern's cultural inspiration. This intermediate-level garment features a sophisticated construction with optional shaping details, decorative stitch work, and a distinctive hi-lo hemline.

Construction Method and Techniques

The Sügis sweater is worked seamlessly in the round in one piece using a top-down construction method. The design employs the contiguous method for joining sections without seaming. The upper body incorporates strategic increases to enhance fit and shaping. The pattern includes optional bust darts for customized fit on fuller busts.

After the sleeves are divided from the body, the lower body continues with pleats positioned in the center of both front and back panels. The sweater can be worked with or without these pleats, offering flexibility in the final design. The distinctive hi-lo hemline is created using short-row shaping, adding visual interest and modern style to the traditional pattern elements.

Stitch Patterns and Details

  • Stranded colorwork sections featuring traditional Estonian stitch patterns, framed by Latvian braids for added texture and visual definition
  • Small stranded pattern worked on both sleeves and body before the ribbing
  • Pleats in the center front and back of the lower body (optional)
  • Ribbing at cuffs and hem for structure and elasticity
  • Short-row shaping for the hi-lo hemline construction

Materials and Gauge

The Sügis sweater is designed for 4-ply yarn weight (also known as fingering weight). The recommended gauge is 26 stitches by 36 rows over 10 by 10 centimeters (4 by 4 inches) when worked with the larger needle size.

Knitters will need circular needles in 3 mm (US 2½) and 2.5 mm (US 2) sizes. The larger needle is used for the main fabric to achieve the specified gauge, while the smaller needle is typically used for ribbed sections. Needle size should be adjusted as needed to match the recommended gauge with your chosen yarn.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with experience in seamless construction, colorwork techniques, and shaping methods. Familiarity with top-down sweater construction and reading stitch charts is recommended.
