Product Description
The Set Adrift Shawl is made from Lion Brand Mandala, a wonderful yarn with beautiful drape. I have been wanting to make a triangle shawl pattern for quite some time, and this colorway really spoke to me.
I wanted a floaty triangle shawl to take with me on vacations, especially to the beach! With the right length and drape, a shawl like this can double as a sarong over a swimsuit and make a nice wrap on a cool evening with the breeze blowing over the water.

What Is Being Made
The Set Adrift Shawl is a crocheted triangular wrap designed as a beginner-friendly project. This shawl measures 60 inches wide when completed following the full pattern, though crafters can continue working the repeating pattern sequence to create a larger or smaller finished size according to their preference. The shawl is constructed using a systematic stitch pattern that builds outward, making it an ideal project for those new to crochet who want to create a wearable accessory.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Set Adrift Shawl employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern requires knowledge and execution of the following essential stitches:
- Chain stitch (ch) – the foundation stitch used throughout the pattern
- Double crochet (dc) – a basic stitch that forms the primary fabric structure
- Treble crochet (tr) – a taller stitch that adds texture and variation to the design
- Chain spaces (ch sp) – openwork areas created by chains that provide lacy, breathable sections within the shawl
A notable technique used throughout this project is back loop only (BLO) construction. Excluding chain spaces, stitches are worked into the back loop only rather than under both loops, which creates a distinctive textured appearance and adds visual interest to the finished shawl.
Materials and Tools
The Set Adrift Shawl pattern calls for Lion Brand Mandala yarn in a DK/sport weight classification. This yarn is composed of 100% acrylic fiber, offering durability and easy care. Three balls of yarn are required, with each ball containing 5.3 ounces and 590 yards of yardage, providing a total of approximately 1,770 yards for the complete 60-inch shawl. The pattern specifies yarn color #212 Spirit.
A US Size G/6 (4.0mm) crochet hook is used to work with the DK weight yarn at the recommended gauge. Additionally, a tapestry needle is needed for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is designed to achieve a gauge of 13 rows by 21 stitches over a 4-inch by 4-inch square when working double crochet stitches. This gauge measurement is essential for achieving the intended finished dimensions. The base pattern produces a 60-inch wide shawl, though the repeating stitch pattern structure allows crafters to continue beyond the written instructions to create custom sizing.
Difficulty Level
Classified as a beginner-level pattern, the Set Adrift Shawl is accessible to crocheters who have foundational knowledge of basic stitches. No advanced techniques, color changes, or complex stitch combinations are required, making this an excellent project for building confidence with fundamental crochet skills while creating a finished, wearable garment.
