Serenity Cosy Slipper Socks by Jennifer Lee

What is Being Made

Serenity is a pair of microfiber slipper-socks designed to be warm, soft, and exceptionally comfortable for everyday wear. These slipper-socks combine the structure of traditional socks with the coziness of slippers, making them ideal for keeping feet warm during relaxation at home. The pattern includes instructions for making a pair (two slipper-socks), with sizing available in Small, Medium, and Large to fit foot circumferences of 23cm (9 inches), 25cm (10 inches), and 27cm (10.5 inches) respectively.

Techniques and Construction Methods

The Serenity slipper-socks employ a thoughtful combination of knitting techniques to create both comfort and functionality. The construction begins with a rib cuff, which provides elasticity and a secure fit around the ankle area. This ribbed section uses a classic knit-purl pattern that allows the cuff to stretch and conform to the wearer's leg.

The main foot section is worked in stocking stitch, a fundamental knitting technique that creates a smooth, flat fabric ideal for the body of the slipper-sock. This stitch pattern is created by alternating knit rows and purl rows, producing the characteristic V-shaped appearance that is both aesthetically pleasing and comfortable against the skin.

A distinctive feature of these slipper-socks is the garter stitch sole. Garter stitch, created by knitting every row, produces a textured, bumpy fabric that provides traction and durability where the foot makes contact with the ground. This practical design element helps prevent slipping while walking and extends the lifespan of the slipper-socks through increased wear resistance.

Stitches Used

  • Ribbing (K2, P2): Used in the cuff section to create elasticity and ensure a snug fit around the ankle
  • Stocking Stitch: The primary stitch for the foot section, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, refined fabric
  • Garter Stitch: Applied to the sole of the slipper-socks, created by knitting every row to provide texture, grip, and durability

Materials and Equipment

The Serenity slipper-socks are designed to be knitted with DK weight yarn, specifically Miss Tricot Filati Mon Amour in 50-gram balls with a yardage of 135 meters per ball. The pattern requires 2 balls of yarn for all three sizes (Small, Medium, and Large), though the designer notes that quantities may vary depending on individual knitting tension and yarn characteristics.

Knitting is worked on a pair of 4.00mm knitting needles (UK size 8, US size 6), which are appropriately sized for DK weight yarn. A wool needle is required for sewing up and finishing the slipper-socks after the main knitting is complete.

The recommended tension for this pattern is 21 stitches and 28 rows to 10 centimeters (4 inches) when working over stocking stitch using 4.00mm needles. Achieving the correct tension is important for ensuring the finished slipper-socks fit properly and have the intended fabric characteristics.

Difficulty Level

Despite being rated as an intermediate difficulty project overall, the pattern is noted as Easy in execution. This makes Serenity an accessible project for knitters with some experience who are looking to expand their skills, while remaining straightforward enough that the construction process is not overly complex.
