Product Description
A hexagon blanket is a great way to show off an ombre effect yarn. Worked in the round using just 2 stitches throughout, it works up fast and creates a lovely small blanket using just 2x 150g balls of yarn. I used the King Cole Curiosity DK in Mother of Pearl but you could substitute for any dk yarn you like. Using a gradient yarn means so need to change colour so it works up super fast! Finish with optional tassels or pom poms to each of the 6 points to finish.
Pattern written in UK terms. Tension not critical but may effect overall size and yarn quantity needed. I worked to 18 tr over 10 rows for 10 cms. Finished blanket measures approx. 38 inches across at the widest point.
Seren Hexagon Blanket by Hello Moon Crochet
Project Overview
The Seren Hexagon Blanket is a crochet design created by Hayley Hall of Hello Moon Crochet. This blanket showcases a geometric hexagon construction worked in the round, making it an excellent project for displaying ombre or gradient yarn effects. The finished blanket measures approximately 38 inches across at its widest point, creating a small but versatile throw suitable for various home décor applications.
What Is Being Made
This project produces a hexagon-shaped blanket with six distinct points. The design is specifically engineered to highlight the natural color progression of ombre yarn, eliminating the need for color changes during construction. The blanket can be finished with optional decorative elements such as tassels or pom poms attached to each of the six points for added visual interest and texture.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Seren Hexagon Blanket employs several fundamental crochet techniques to achieve its structure and visual appeal:
- Working in the Round: The entire blanket is constructed using circular crochet methods, allowing for the hexagon shape to develop organically from a central point
- Treble Crochet: This stitch forms the primary fabric of the blanket, creating a lightweight yet substantial drape
- Front Post Double Trebles: These textured stitches are incorporated to add dimensional detail and visual complexity to the design
- Chain Spaces: Chain stitches create openwork areas and structural definition throughout the pattern
Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations
The pattern uses standard UK crochet terminology throughout. Key stitches and abbreviations include:
- Ch – Chain stitch, used for foundation and structural elements
- Tr – Treble crochet, the primary stitch used in the blanket body
- Ch-sp – Chain space, referring to the space created beneath chain stitches
- St(s) – Stitch or stitches
The pattern notes that the starting chain counts as a stitch throughout the project, which is important for maintaining accurate stitch counts and pattern progression.
Materials and Tools Required
The Seren Hexagon Blanket requires minimal materials, making it an economical project:
- Yarn: 2 × 150g balls of DK weight yarn. The original design uses King Cole Curiosity DK in Mother of Pearl, an ombre yarn that showcases color gradation beautifully. Any DK weight yarn can be substituted according to personal preference
- Additional Yarn: Approximately 35g of yarn for creating optional tassels or pom poms for the six points
- Hook: 5mm crochet hook
Difficulty Level and Gauge
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with some experience who are comfortable working in the round and managing multiple stitch types. The pattern notes that tension is not critical, though variations in tension may affect the overall finished size and yarn quantity needed. The designer worked to a tension of 18 treble crochet stitches over 10 rows for 10 centimeters.
Design Advantages
The use of gradient or ombre yarn eliminates the need for color changes, allowing the blanket to work up quickly while still creating a visually striking finished piece. The DK weight yarn combined with treble crochet stitches produces a fabric with excellent drape and a balanced weight suitable for a throw blanket. The optional tassel or pom pom embellishments add a handmade, artisanal finishing touch that enhances the blanket's decorative appeal.
