Product Description
An adult sized headband worked in a simple cable pattern.
This knitting pattern is a great way to precatice your cable skills as there is no shaping involved. You just knit a long strip and sew the ends together.
This headband looks really pretty using a self striping yarn. You can use a plain chunky yarn if preferred.

What Is Being Made
The Self Striping Headband is a beginner-friendly knitted accessory designed to showcase the natural color variations of self-striping yarn. This headband measures approximately 12cm in width and 42cm in length, making it a quick and satisfying project suitable for knitters new to cable techniques. The finished piece functions as a cozy head accessory that stretches to fit comfortably.
Techniques Used
This pattern introduces knitters to cable work, a foundational technique that creates textured, twisted columns in knitted fabric. The design incorporates basic cable crossing using a cable needle, which is worked at regular intervals throughout the piece to build visual interest and dimension. The pattern alternates between stockinette sections and reverse stockinette panels, creating a balanced aesthetic that allows self-striping yarn colors to shine. The headband is constructed in a flat piece and then seamed at the ends to form the finished band.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K): The fundamental stitch that forms the base of the fabric
- Purl (P): The reverse of the knit stitch, used to create textured reverse stockinette panels
- Cable 4 Back (C4b): A cable cross where 2 stitches are slipped onto a cable needle and held to the back of the work, the next 2 stitches are knitted from the main needle, then the 2 stitches from the cable needle are knitted. This creates a twisted rope-like texture
Materials and Specifications
The Self Striping Headband requires 6mm knitting needles and approximately 50 grams of chunky weight yarn that knits to the same 6mm needle size. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable stitches. The pattern specifies a tension gauge of 7 stitches and 9 rows over 5cm measured in pattern on 6mm needles. Additional materials include scissors and a yarn needle for sewing the seams and weaving in loose ends. The yarn shown in the pattern photograph is Paintbox Chunky Pots, a self-striping option that demonstrates how color changes naturally occur throughout the knitting process without requiring manual color changes by the knitter.
Pattern Structure
The pattern begins with casting on 18 stitches and works a 6-row repeat that combines knit rows, reverse stockinette sections, and cable crossings. Rows 1, 3, and 5 feature different stitch combinations, while rows 2, 4, and 6 establish the reverse stockinette texture. The cable crossing appears on row 5, creating visual texture that repeats throughout the piece. Knitters work this 6-row sequence repeatedly until the headband reaches the desired length, finishing on a wrong-side row before casting off all stitches in knit. The final step involves seaming the two ends together and weaving in any loose yarn ends to complete the finished headband.
