Selena's Double Chevron Wrap by Yellow Ribbon Knits
Project Overview
Selena's Double Chevron Wrap is an intermediate-level knitted shawl pattern designed by Yellow Ribbon Knits. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a sophisticated wrap featuring double chevron stitch work, making it an ideal project for knitters with some experience who are ready to explore directional stitch patterns and shaping techniques.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a knitted wrap featuring a distinctive double chevron design. The wrap is constructed using a combination of stockinette and chevron stitches that create a visually striking directional pattern. The finished piece requires a total of 1700 yards (1600 meters) of yarn, making it a substantial project suitable for wrapping around the shoulders or wearing as a large shawlette.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Directional Stitch Work: The double chevron pattern creates diagonal lines and V-shaped motifs throughout the wrap, requiring attention to stitch direction and pattern repeats
- Decreasing Methods: Multiple decrease techniques are employed, including slip-slip-knit (ssk) and knit-2-together (k2tog) to shape the chevron points
- Wrap and Turn Shaping: The pattern incorporates wrap and turn (w&t) techniques for short-row shaping, allowing the designer to create three-dimensional shaping within the flat fabric
- Stitch Manipulation: Advanced techniques include slip-knit-pass slipped stitch over (sl, k2, psso2) and combined wrap-and-stitch-together methods (kw&stog and pw&stog) for seamless stitch integration
- Colorwork: The pattern features multiple color changes using three contrast colors in addition to the main color, creating visual interest and pattern definition
Stitches Used
- Knit (k): Basic knit stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
- Purl (p): Reverse stitch used for textural contrast and pattern definition
- Slip, Slip, Knit (ssk): Left-leaning decrease used to shape chevron points
- Knit 2 Together (k2tog): Right-leaning decrease creating balanced shaping
- Wrap and Turn (w&t): Short-row technique for dimensional shaping
- Slip, Knit 2, Pass Slipped Stitch Over (sl, k2, psso2): Double decrease for pronounced shaping
- Knit Wrap and Stitch Together (kw&stog): Technique for integrating wrapped stitches seamlessly
- Purl Wrap and Stitch Together (pw&stog): Purl version of wrap integration for pattern continuity
Materials and Specifications
Yarn Requirements: The pattern calls for 1700 yards (1600 meters) of yarn total. The designer recommends Audubon Sport yarn, a 100% superwash merino fiber available in 4-ounce (113-gram) skeins yielding 385 yards (352 meters) per skein. The pattern accommodates yarn weights from 3-ply through sport weight, providing flexibility for yarn substitution.
Recommended Color Palette: The pattern specifies four colors using the designer's custom color names based on mineral compositions:
- Main Color (MC): Si02 - Smokey Quartz (2 hanks required)
- Contrast Color 1 (CC1): Fe3Al2(SiO4)3 - Almandine
- Contrast Color 2 (CC2): MgAl2O4 - Deep Teal Spinel
- Contrast Color 3 (CC3): (Mg, Fe)2SiO4 - Peridot
Needles: The pattern requires 3.5 mm needles or larger to obtain the specified gauge. The designer notes that their personal gauge tends to run loose, so knitters may need to use needles larger than 3.5 mm to achieve the correct fabric density.
