Product Description
Seedeaters are little songbirds that flock together and feed on…well…seeds. The slip stitches in this hat, with their colorful purl bumps that stand out from a Stockinette background, look like they could be mistaken for snacks by one of these adorable birds.
This hat is a quick knit that uses a luxurious bulky yarn with rich, shiny colors. One full skein of a main color and one partial skein of a "seed" color are required, and a third color for a pom pom is optional. You could of course make the pom pom out of your seed color.
Seedeater Hat by Larissa Brown
What is Being Made
The Seedeater Hat is a knitted beanie designed to evoke the appearance of songbirds and seeds. Named after seedeater birds that flock together to feed, this hat features decorative slip stitches with colorful purl bumps that create a visual pattern resembling seeds scattered across a stockinette background. The design includes a coordinating pompom at the crown, making it a playful and whimsical accessory suitable for children and adults.
Sizes and Finished Dimensions
- Bigger Kid: 17" circumference, cast on 64 stitches
- Larger Little Kid: 18" circumference, cast on 68 stitches
- Smaller Adult: 19.5" circumference, cast on 72 stitches
- Adult: Designed to fit head sizes 20", 21–22", and 23" respectively
Knitting Techniques Used
This beginner-friendly knitting pattern employs slip stitches as the primary decorative technique. Slip stitches create raised purl bumps that stand out distinctly against a stockinette stitch background, producing the seed-like visual effect that gives the hat its name. The contrast between the textured slip stitches and smooth stockinette creates dimensional interest without requiring advanced colorwork or shaping techniques, making this an accessible project for knitters new to textured stitch patterns.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch: Forms the primary fabric base of the hat
- Slip Stitches: Create the decorative raised bumps in contrasting colors that resemble seeds
- Ribbing: Used for the hat's cuff to provide elasticity and a fitted edge
Materials and Yarn
The Seedeater Hat is designed to be knitted with Malabrigo Mecha, a merino superwash wool yarn in the aran weight category. The pattern calls for approximately 130 yards (120 meters) per 100-gram skein. The sample shown uses Mostaza as the main color (requiring one full skein), with English Rose and Polar Morn used sparingly for the slip-stitch seeds and pompom respectively, meaning small portions of additional skeins are sufficient for these accent colors.
Needles and Tools
- US 8 (5 mm) circular needles: Used for the ribbed cuff
- US 10 (6 mm) circular needles: Used for the remainder of the hat body
- Gauge: 15 stitches and 18 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) when measured over stockinette stitch with the smaller needles
- Additional tools: Large-eyed sewing needle for weaving in ends, scissors, and a small book or piece of cardboard for wrapping yarn to construct the pompom
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner pattern, the Seedeater Hat is an excellent introduction to textured stitch techniques. While knitters should be comfortable with basic cast-on, knit, purl, and bind-off techniques, the slip-stitch pattern is straightforward to execute and builds confidence in working with multiple colors and dimensional effects without the complexity of Fair Isle or intarsia colorwork.
