Product Description

Inspired by Balenciaga's asymmetrical colour blocking tunics I have designed an oversized sweater with a cowl in shades of grey with a beautiful lilac as contrast. Three different stitch patterns from the same family complete the look. The Seed sweater and cowl is knitted in Amoretto, a lovely soft and warm mixture of alpaca and cotton with a stunning stitch definition. Seed Sweater including cowl is available in both English and Norwegian.

Gauge: 22 sts and 32 rows in st st.

Seed Sweater by Linda Marveng

What is Being Made

The Seed Sweater is an oversized sweater designed as a coordinating set with a snood. Inspired by Balenciaga's asymmetrical color blocking tunics, this intermediate-level knitting project features a relaxed, contemporary silhouette in shades of grey with beautiful lilac as a contrast accent. The design combines multiple stitch patterns from the same family to create visual interest and texture throughout the garment.

Design and Construction

This sweater is constructed using a modular approach with distinct sections. The pattern includes side sections and middle sections that are knitted separately and then joined together. The oversized fit and asymmetrical color blocking create a modern, fashion-forward aesthetic suitable for contemporary knitwear.

Stitch Techniques and Patterns

The Seed Sweater employs three different stitch patterns from the same family to build visual complexity:

  • Seeded Rib Check — a textured stitch pattern worked over multiples of 4 plus 3 stitches, alternating knit and purl stitches in a structured repeat
  • Moss Stitch — a classic texture stitch used in the middle sections of the sweater
  • Additional stitch patterns that complement the overall design aesthetic

The Seeded Rib Check pattern is worked across multiple rows with specific row repeats (rows 1–12) that create a balanced, textured fabric. Rows are alternated between knit and purl combinations to build the characteristic seeded appearance.

Construction Details

The middle sections are cast on with 42 stitches using straight needles, and the Moss stitch pattern is maintained until each section reaches 74 centimeters (29 inches) in length. Sections are then blocked to measurements before being joined together. The pattern includes shoulder shaping instructions, with provisions for reverse shapings on the second shoulder to accommodate the asymmetrical design.

Materials and Yarn

This project is worked in DK and Sport weight yarns, which provide excellent stitch definition for the textured patterns used throughout. The color palette consists of multiple shades of grey with lilac as a contrast color. Straight needles are used for the construction of individual sections.

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle modular construction, multiple stitch patterns, and garment shaping techniques. The oversized fit and blocking process help achieve professional finishing.
