Seaford Hat by Corrine Walcher
Project Overview
The Seaford Hat is a knitted hat design created by independent designer Corrine Walcher, specifically engineered to showcase hand-dyed yarn in striking color variations. This intermediate-level knitting project features a prominent large-scale cable pattern that becomes the focal point of the finished hat. The design was originally created for displaying Malabrigo Rios superwash merino, particularly overdyed colorways. Coordinating pieces including a matching cowl and fingerless gloves are available as separate patterns.
Finished Dimensions
The Seaford Hat is designed to fit a range of head sizes with generous stretch. The hat measures 18 inches around when unstretched and 23 inches around when stretched, accommodating most adult head circumferences. The vertical height of the finished hat is 8.75 inches, providing full coverage for a classic hat silhouette.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern calls for Malabrigo Rios, a premium yarn composed of 100% superwash merino wool. The yarn is available in 210-yard skeins weighing 100 grams. The sample hat shown in the pattern was knit in the colorway Aguas and required approximately 110 yards of yarn, leaving substantial yardage for color changes or pattern experimentation within a single skein.
Needles and Gauge
Knitters may choose between two needle configurations based on personal preference: a set of 5 double-pointed needles or a 16-inch circular needle. Both should be size 6 US (4.00 mm), or adjusted as needed to achieve proper gauge. The pattern is worked in the round, which creates seamless fabric and allows the cable pattern to spiral continuously around the hat.
Proper gauge is essential for this project. The target gauge is 18 stitches and 24 rows per 4 inches when measured in blocked stockinette stitch, knit in the round. Achieving this gauge ensures the hat will stretch to the intended finished measurements and the cable pattern will display at the correct scale.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Seaford Hat employs cable knitting as its primary decorative technique. Cable stitches create twisted columns of fabric by crossing groups of stitches over one another, producing the dimensional, rope-like texture that defines this design. The large-scale cables are substantial enough to showcase color variations in hand-dyed yarn, making them particularly striking in variegated colorways.
The pattern utilizes several cable crossing abbreviations:
- 2/1 LPC (Left Purl Cross): Slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold in front; purl 1 stitch from the left needle; knit 2 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a cable that leans to the left with a purl stitch separating the twisted columns.
- 2/1 RPC (Right Purl Cross): Slip 1 stitch to a cable needle and hold in back; knit 2 stitches from the left needle; purl 1 stitch from the cable needle. This creates a cable that leans to the right with a purl stitch separating the twisted columns.
- 2/2 LC (Left Cable): Slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold in front; knit 2 stitches from the left needle; knit 2 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a balanced cable crossing without purl separation.
The pattern also incorporates fundamental knitting stitches including knit and purl stitches, which form the base fabric and create contrast with the cable crossings. Stitch markers are used to denote the beginning of rounds and pattern repeats, essential for maintaining pattern alignment when working in the round.
Difficulty Level
This hat is rated as an intermediate knitting project. While the basic techniques of knit and purl stitches are fundamental, cable work requires comfort with manipulating stitches on cable needles and maintaining consistent tension across cable crossings. Knitters should have experience working in the round before attempting this pattern. The large-scale cables are forgiving compared to fine cable work, making this an excellent project for knitters expanding their skills into cable knitting.
Yarn Weight Considerations
