Sea Line Headband by Nuria Pastor
What is Being Made
The Sea Line Headband is a feminine and lightweight knitted headband designed to keep ears warm while maintaining a delicate aesthetic. This intermediate-level knitting project is part of designer Nuria Pastor's Sea Line collection, which draws inspiration from oceanic themes. The finished headband measures approximately 55 cm (21 ½ inches) in length and 9 cm (3 ½ inches) in width, making it a practical accessory for various seasons and occasions.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs the short rows technique as a primary construction method, which creates shaping and dimension in the headband. The designer specifically uses the wrap and turn method for executing short rows, chosen for its aesthetic appearance in this particular design. The pattern is constructed in two distinct parts: the first section involves decreasing rows where wraps are placed, followed by a second section featuring increases where only the previously worked wraps are picked up. This structured approach creates the headband's shaped form.
Stitches Used
The pattern is worked primarily in Stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance on the right side and bumpy texture on the wrong side. This fundamental stitch is ideal for showcasing the yarn's color and creating the light, feminine drape characteristic of the Sea Line Headband design.
Materials
- Yarn: Cascade 220 (100% wool, 220 yards per 100 grams skein) in shade 9430 Highland Green. Approximately 46 meters / 50 yards of yarn is required to complete the project. The pattern notes that samples were also knitted with Malabrigo Rios in Bobbly Blue, demonstrating the design's versatility with different yarn choices.
- Needles: 4 mm / US 6 needles for working the pattern
- Notions: Stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, a tapestry needle for finishing and weaving in ends, and 1 button for closure
Gauge
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 22 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the finished measurements specified in the pattern.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, the Sea Line Headband is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technique repertoire. The incorporation of short rows and the wrap and turn method makes this pattern an excellent opportunity to develop shaping skills while working with a manageable project size.
