Product Description
This cosy is unusual – it's tail hides the handle of the pot and the spout is covered by the bird's removable head. Note: you need a teapot with a reasonable length of spout – stubby little spouts won't work with this one.
For those who don't know: a scrub turkey (sometimes called a brush turkey) is a large mound building bird, found in eastern Australia. It is the bane of all gardeners – it's aim is to scrape all of your garden into one place, in the form of a huge mound in which to lay it's eggs. I know someone who came back from a weekend away, to find all her back garden beds in a 6 foot heap on her back lawn! Because of this endearing habit, it is very satisfying to rip off the scrub turkey's head in order to pour your tea! (Apologies to bird lovers – I didn't mean it really!)
Scrub Turkey Tea Cosy by Rian Anderson
What is Being Made
The Scrub Turkey Tea Cosy is a knitted tea cosy designed to fit medium to long-spouted teapots, measuring approximately 48 cm all around at the widest part and 15–16 cm in height. This intermediate-level knitting project features a removable head that lifts off to allow pouring tea, making it both functional and decorative. The design is specifically engineered for teapots with a diameter of 15–20 cm and a height of 12–15 cm from base to lid.
Techniques Used
This knitting pattern employs fundamental techniques suitable for intermediate knitters. The construction involves working in stocking stitch, the most common knit fabric used in garment and accessory design. Knitters will work with two different needle sizes and yarn weights to achieve proper tension and fit, demonstrating an understanding of how gauge affects finished dimensions. The pattern requires careful measurement of a tension swatch before beginning, a critical step that ensures the tea cosy will fit the intended teapot correctly. The removable head component adds a practical design element that requires precise shaping and finishing.
Stitches Used
- Stocking Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the project, created by alternating knit and purl rows to form a smooth, flat fabric with a characteristic V-pattern appearance
Materials
The Scrub Turkey Tea Cosy is worked using 8 ply/DK weight yarn in three colours: black (100 grams), red (10 grams), and yellow (20 grams). Knitters will need one pair of 5.5 mm (US 9) needles. The pattern accommodates two different tension gauges depending on yarn application: 15 stitches and 21 rows over 10 cm in stocking stitch on 5.5 mm needles using doubled 8 ply/DK yarn, or 20 stitches and 28 rows over 10 cm in stocking stitch on 4 mm needles using single 8 ply/DK yarn. Accurate tension measurement is essential before beginning the project.
Design Specifications
This downloadable PDF pattern, created by independent designer Rian Anderson in 2011, is formatted for digital download and includes detailed measurements for both the finished tea cosy and the teapot it is designed to fit. The pattern emphasizes the importance of checking tension before beginning and provides clear guidance on measuring a tension swatch to ensure accuracy. The design accommodates spout openings of 8–9 cm and handle openings of 10–12 cm, making it suitable for a range of standard teapot styles with medium to long spouts.
