Product Description

Living in the Midwestern United States, you would think that during the hot summer months I would be putting my hand-knits away and forgetting about them until the fall chill starts to hit the air. But you would be wrong! There always seems to be an overly climate-controlled space where I need a little something. While a light-weight shawl can work wonders at keeping that cool air at bay, nothing beats a pair of fingerless mitts for keeping my hands comfortable in that (just a little bit too) cool office!

Scrolling Mitts by Mary E Rose Designs

What is Being Made

The Scrolling Mitts are a pair of fingerless mitts designed for keeping hands warm in cool, climate-controlled environments. These lightweight hand-knits measure 8.5 inches (21.5 cm) in length with a 6.75 inch (17 cm) circumference, making them ideal for layering during warmer seasons or in air-conditioned spaces where extra warmth is needed without the bulk of full mittens.

Craft and Project Type

This is a knitting project classified as an intermediate-level design. The mitts are worked as gloves or mittens using the small-diameter in-the-round method, which is a fundamental technique for creating seamless, tubular garments for the hands.

Techniques Used

  • Working in the round using circular or double-pointed needles
  • Lace pattern construction for a decorative, open-work design
  • Fingerless mitt shaping and finishing
  • Gauge-based sizing and fit adjustments

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Scrolling Mitts feature a lace pattern as the primary stitch pattern. The lace construction creates an open, scrolling design that defines the visual character of these mitts. The pattern is worked to a gauge of 26 stitches and 40 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in the lace pattern, which is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: Brown Sheep Cotton Fine (80% cotton, 20% wool blend; 222 yards/203 meters per 50 grams). The pattern is shown in Light Lavender colorway, requiring 1 ball of yarn. The 4-ply yarn weight provides a lightweight, breathable fabric suitable for layering in warm climates.

Needles: US 2 (2.75 mm) circular needles or double-pointed needles, chosen based on preferred method for working small-diameter projects in the round.

Notions: Stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings.
