Product Description
This crochet pattern for the Scorpion by Sarah Quillen creates a soft lovable 9" stuffed animal. The terms are US. The pattern includes an “easy to follow” layout with many pictures for reference. The pattern is designed for blanket yarn but can also be done in worsted weight yarn with a size F hook and 10mm eyes to create a much smaller scropion. I have chosen two similar colors to the ones I used in the example that Love Crafts has to make the scorpion.
For this pattern you will need:
o Bernat Blanket Yarn (less than one ball for each color)
o Hook size US K 10.5 / 6.5mm
o Yarn needle
o Stitch marker
o Polyester fiberfill stuffing
o 2 safety eyes (15mm)
Scorpion Amigurumi by Sarah Quillen
What Is Being Made
The Scorpion is a crocheted stuffed toy (amigurumi) designed by Sarah Quillen. This three-dimensional creature features the characteristic body segments and curved tail of a scorpion, created through intermediate-level crochet techniques. The finished toy is suitable for display or play and demonstrates how to construct a complex animal form using basic crochet stitches built up in rounds.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. The pattern employs amigurumi techniques, which involve crocheting pieces in the round and stuffing them to create three-dimensional sculptural forms. The designer works various sections of the scorpion separately in rounds before assembling them together, allowing for dimensional shaping and realistic proportions in the finished toy.
Stitches and Crochet Methods
While the PDF excerpt does not detail every individual stitch used throughout the pattern, the design relies on fundamental crochet stitches worked in continuous rounds. The pattern emphasizes maintaining sufficiently tight stitches to prevent gaping when the pieces are stuffed with fiberfill. The designer notes that gauge is not critical for this project, but stitch tension is essential for structural integrity and a polished appearance.
Materials Required
Yarn: The Scorpion pattern calls for Bernat Blanket Yarn, Bernat Baby Blanket, or Bernat Blanket Brights—all chunky to super-chunky weight yarns that create a quick, squishy finished toy. The designer recommends purchasing the largest ball size available (10.5 oz / 300g) to ensure color availability, though specific yardage amounts for each color are listed within the pattern itself.
- Hook: US K 10.5 / 6.5mm crochet hook
- Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming pieces together
- Stitch marker: For tracking the beginning of rounds
- Stuffing: Polyester fiberfill stuffing for filling the crocheted pieces
- Safety eyes: Two safety eyes in the size specified within the pattern instructions
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. Crafters should be comfortable with basic crochet stitches, working in the round, increasing and decreasing stitches, and assembling multiple pieces. The three-dimensional shaping and attention to tension required make this suitable for crocheters with some prior experience rather than absolute beginners.
Designer and Source
The Scorpion pattern is designed by Sarah Quillen and is available through her independent designer shop. The pattern is presented as a downloadable PDF format, allowing crafters to work at their own pace with printed or digital instructions.
