Product Description

Join us for a sock-tacular KAL in the Baah Yarn Knitters group on Ravelry! We'll be sharing tutorial videos during the KAL and there will be prizes, too! KAL begins October 1, 2013 and ends on October 31, 2013.

A twist on the average ribbed sock, this simple pattern is enough to keep you interested all the way through. You can choose to make both socks scallop in the same direction, or have them be mirror images of each other (there are instructions for both variations). Also great for variegated yarns!

This pattern was originally published in February 2008. It has since been updated to include an additional size option, clearer instructions, better photos, and most importantly...CHARTS!

If you previously purchased this pattern and did not receive a free update for some reason, please Ravelry PM me with proof of purchase for a free pattern update!

Scalloped Rib Socks by Stefanie Goodwin Ritter

What is Being Made

The Scalloped Rib Socks are a women's sock design featuring decorative scalloped detailing combined with ribbed stitch patterns. This intermediate-level knitting project is available in two sizes: Women's S/M with a cuff circumference of approximately 7 inches, and Women's M/L with a cuff circumference of approximately 8 inches. The pattern is designed as a downloadable PDF for personal, non-commercial use.

Knitting Techniques Used

This sock pattern employs several key knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate knitters. The design incorporates yarn overs as a central design element to create the scalloped edging effect. The pattern notes emphasize the importance of maintaining proper tension with yarn overs, specifically advising knitters not to make yarn overs too tight so they can be easily passed over the next three stitches. The socks are constructed using the circular knitting method on double-pointed needles, which is the traditional approach for sock construction. The pattern includes leg shaping and requires picking up stitches during construction, indicating a multi-section assembly process typical of top-down sock patterns.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure in these socks is stockinette stitch, which serves as the base fabric and is referenced in the gauge specification. Ribbed stitches are featured prominently in the design, as indicated by the pattern name and contributing to the sock's structure and fit. Yarn overs are used decoratively to create the scalloped detail that distinguishes this design, requiring careful execution to ensure they can be properly decreased in subsequent rows.

Materials and Specifications

The Scalloped Rib Socks require minimal yardage, making them an efficient project. The pattern calls for 1 skein of Baah! La Jolla yarn in the Tequila Lime colorway, which provides 400 yards of 100% Superwash Merino fiber in a 4-ply weight. This yarn weight and fiber content make the socks durable, easy to care for, and suitable for everyday wear. Knitters will need US #1 Double-Pointed Needles to achieve the specified gauge of 30 stitches over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Additional materials include a stitch marker for tracking rounds and a darning needle for weaving in ends upon completion.
