Product Description
Moths of the family Saturnidae are characterized by their big, fluffy bodies and stunning wing patterns. Snuggle into the Saturniid Cowl, which celebrates our fuzzy night-dwelling friends along with the shifting phases of the moon and glimmering stars. Designed to convey an aura of calm and a little bit of magic, this wide, relaxed-fit cowl features engaging stranded colorwork framed by familiar ribbing.
The cowl is knit in one piece in the round starting from the bottom up. Charts are provided for the main colorwork and for four moon phases, which can be placed as recommended or remixed as desired.
This pattern has been tech edited and test knit.

What is Being Made
The Saturniid Cowl is a wide, relaxed-fit cowl designed by Lucia Blackwell that celebrates the beauty of Saturnidae moths—characterized by their large, fluffy bodies and intricate wing patterns—alongside celestial imagery of moon phases and stars. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished piece intended to convey an aura of calm and subtle magic through its visual design and wearable form.
Techniques and Colorwork
This advanced-level knitting project features stranded colorwork as its primary decorative technique. The colorwork motifs are strategically framed by ribbing, which provides structure and helps define the design elements. The pattern is worked in the round, creating a seamless cowl construction. Stranded colorwork—also called Fair Isle knitting—involves carrying yarn colors across the back of the work to create intricate two-color patterns, requiring careful tension management and color coordination throughout the project.
Stitches Used
The Saturniid Cowl employs fundamental knitting stitches executed at an advanced level:
- Knit (K) stitches form the primary fabric structure
- Purl (P) stitches create the ribbed edging and textural definition
- Stockinette stitch serves as the base fabric for the stranded colorwork sections, worked in the round to create smooth, V-shaped columns
The ribbed framing uses alternating knit and purl stitches to create vertical columns that elastically frame the colorwork motifs.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern requires fingering-weight yarn in two colors:
- Main color (MC): 260 yards (238 meters) of fingering-weight yarn. The sample uses Malabrigo Sock in Whales Road
- Contrast color (CC): 64 yards (58 meters) of fingering-weight yarn. The sample uses Malabrigo Sock in Flavia
The pattern calls for US size 2 (2.75 mm) and US size 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles measuring 24 inches (60 cm) in length to accommodate the cowl's circumference. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and tape for securing yarn ends.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 28 stitches and 24 rounds per 4 inches in stockinette stitch using the larger needles. While gauge is noted as not crucial for this project, variations in gauge may affect the finished dimensions and the total amount of yarn required. The larger needles create a slightly more open, relaxed fabric compared to the smaller needles, contributing to the cowl's comfortable, loose-fitting aesthetic.
