Product Description

This is my ode to the show Outlander. This outlander caplet is reminiscent of the one Brianna wore from season 4 and on. This is my rendition of it! Enjoy.

It is made for one size but once you start the pattern you will see how it can be adjusted to make the shoulders wider.

Materials you will need to start for the Sassenach Capelet Crochet Pattern:

4 skeins of Cat 5 Chunky Yarn: I used Yarn Bee Creatively Colorful (400yards as written more if adjusting), but I have also use Charisma bulky tweeds or Buttercream roving

6.5 mm Crochet hook.

2 large buttons

This pattern unlike others uses a variety of Half Double Crochets and Single crochets and short rows to achieve this look.

What Is Being Made

The Sassenach Capelet is a beginner-friendly crochet cape designed as a wearable layering piece. This capelet features a structured silhouette that drapes elegantly from the shoulders, with dimensions measuring 17 inches in finished length, 27 inches wide at the neck, and flaring to 43 inches at the hem. The design is secured with two large buttons, making it both functional and stylish for adding warmth and texture to any outfit.

Crochet Techniques Used

This pattern employs several fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The construction relies on consistent stitch counts maintained at 48 stitches per round throughout most of the project, eliminating the need for increasing stitches. The pattern utilizes turning techniques after each row or half row, and incorporates repetitive stitch sequences that become easier to execute once the initial pattern repeat is mastered. The designer notes that after learning the foundational repeat, crafters may only need to reference the pattern occasionally.

Stitches Used

  • Half Double Crochet (HDC) – A fundamental stitch that forms the primary structure
  • Single Crochet (SC) – Used for shaping and detail work
  • Double Crochet (DC) – Incorporated for texture and drape variation
  • Slip Stitches – Used for joining and finishing techniques
  • Back Loops – A technique variation that creates textural interest
  • 3rd Loop Work – An advanced loop technique for dimensional effects

Materials Required

Yarn: The pattern calls for 400 to 600 yards of category 5 bulky weight yarn. The designer used Hobby Lobby Yarn Bee Creatively Colorful in the colorway Mustard Flower/04, which comes in 3.5 ounce skeins containing 130 yards each. Approximately 4 skeins are needed for the capelet as written, though 600 yards total is recommended for those desiring a wider finished piece. Alternative yarn options include Charisma brand, which features 97-yard skeins; approximately 5 skeins of this yarn were used in testing.

Tools: A 6.5 mm crochet hook is required for working with the bulky yarn. Additionally, needles for weaving in ends are necessary for finishing the project.

Notions: Two large buttons measuring 1¾ to 2 inches are needed to secure the capelet closure.

Pattern Notes

This downloadable PDF pattern is designed for crochet crafters of beginner skill level. The pattern maintains a consistent stitch count of 48 stitches per round, simplifying the construction process. Stitch counts are provided at the beginning of the pattern but are not repeated throughout, as the designer emphasizes the importance of maintaining consistent stitch numbers. The repetitive nature of the pattern design means that once the core repeat is understood, crafters can work with greater independence and confidence.
