Lots of choice
Yes it’s only January, but I’m starting early for next Christmas. It’s an easy to follow pattern. All knit but not sewn together yet.
All parts are knitted flat and sewn up at the end. No circular knitting is required.
I have used 4-ply (fingering) cotton yarn, however, you can use DK (8-ply) with slightly larger needles (3-3.5mm). If you would like to use DK, you will need about 30g of red. The doll will come out about 25cm with DK. If you are a loose knitter, I recommend using DK with fine needles (2.75-3mm).
The cotton swab is inserted into the neck area for extra stability. Omit it if you like. You can use safety eyes instead of mushroom-shaped beads. Attach them before stuffing the head if you are using them. You can use coloured fleece if you dislike the stuffing showing through the stitches.
This is an intermediate-level knitting pattern for a finished Santa doll measuring 18cm in height. Designed by Sachiyo Ishii, this downloadable PDF provides detailed instructions for creating a charming knitted Santa figure using primarily 4-ply yarn and basic knitting techniques.
A three-dimensional knitted Santa doll standing approximately 18cm tall. The pattern creates a complete figurative piece with distinct body components including the head, body, and facial features, resulting in a finished decorative or collectible doll.
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including K (knit), P (purl), Kfb (knit front and back), K2tog (knit two together), P2tog (purl two together), and Skpo (slip one, knit one, pass slipped stitch over). Stitches are held on stitch holders during construction.
This pattern requires 4-ply (fingering weight) yarn in multiple colors and fiber types to create the Santa's various components:
The pattern emphasizes leaving long yarn ends at the beginning and end of sections for efficient sewing. Seams are constructed using the mattress stitch technique with the right side of the work facing outward, creating neat, invisible joins. Cotton swabs are incorporated into the doll during assembly, likely to provide structure or support for specific features. The combination of smooth 4-ply cotton yarn with fluffy polyester yarn creates textural contrast, particularly for Santa's characteristic beard and trim details.
