Product Description
KNITTING PATTERN Pdf instant download This sweet little knitting pattern is for a tiny premature baby to newborn Santa hat in 5 different sizes, using wonderfully soft 4ply (UK) knitting yarn, with a super soft and cuddly DK snowflake yarn for the brim and pompom. I created it because I wanted to make tiny baby clothes that were practical as well as beautiful for premature babies. The yarn is machine washable acrylic and the fabric is a flat stocking stitch. The hats can be knitted in the round using 3mm double pointed needles or 3mm straight needles (instructions for both included). This design uses 4 ply (UK) yarn which is really soft to the skin as well as machine washable. 3mm dpns or 3mm straight needles are required. It is written using UK terms. Sizes: 1lb - 8lb baby (5 sizes) 6 1/2 inches - 14 inches (5 sizes) It would make a lovely set to donate to your local NICU unit for Christmas.
Premature to Newborn Baby Santa Hat
What is Being Made
This is a festive Santa Hat designed specifically for premature and newborn babies, created by designer Angela Turner. The pattern includes five graduated sizes to accommodate babies from premature weight through 8 pounds, making it adaptable for various newborn stages. Each size features a different circumference measurement, ranging from 6½ inches for the smallest premature babies up to 14 inches for larger newborns.
Techniques and Construction
This knitting pattern employs fundamental techniques suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The hat is constructed using stocking stitch as the primary fabric, which creates a smooth, classic knit appearance. The pattern utilizes decreasing stitches to shape the crown of the hat, using techniques such as knit 2 together (k2tog) and slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over (skpo) to gradually reduce stitches and create the tapered Santa hat silhouette. The construction begins with a flat piece worked in rows before transitioning to circular knitting on double-pointed needles for the crown shaping.
Stitches Used
- Stocking stitch (st-st): The foundation fabric throughout the hat
- Knit (k): Basic knit stitch
- Purl (p): Reverse knit stitch for texture variation
- Knit 2 together (k2tog): Decrease stitch for crown shaping
- Slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over (skpo): Alternative decrease method
- Yarn forward (yfwd): Creates decorative eyelet details
- Increase (inc): Stitch increases as needed for sizing
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for Sirdar Snuggly 4ply yarn in red for the main hat construction. The first size requires 1 x 50g ball of red yarn (Rascal 472). For decorative accents, a small amount of Sirdar Snuggly snowflake DK yarn in cream (631) is used—only 25g is needed for the second size onwards. Knitting needles required include 3mm straight needles for the initial flat knitting and 4 x 3mm double-pointed needles for working the crown in the round. A tapestry needle is needed for finishing and weaving in ends.
Size Range and Fit
The pattern provides five distinct sizes to ensure proper fit across the newborn weight spectrum:
- First size: 1–1½ lb babies with 6½" circumference
- Second size: 1½–2 lb babies with 7½" circumference
- Third size: 2–4 lb babies with 9" circumference
- Fourth size: 4–6 lb babies with 12" circumference
- Fifth size: 6–8 lb babies with 14" circumference
Pattern Difficulty and Suitability
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is appropriate for knitters with basic stitch knowledge who are ready to work with decreases and transition between straight and double-pointed needles. The use of 4ply yarn and 3mm needles creates a delicate, appropriately-scaled garment for tiny babies. The pattern includes standard knitting abbreviations and tension guidance to ensure proper sizing and fit.
