Product Description
This lacy cardigan with three quarter length sleeves and simple twisted cord ties is the perfect way to welcome spring. No more bundling up - slip this on over a cotton dress or tee shirt and jeans for something light and pretty.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Bust - 37¼ (40¼, 43, 46)(47½, 50¼, 53¼)". Intended to be worn with 0-2" of ease.
YARN: 1130 (1243, 1348, 1516)(1568, 1668, 1738) yds DK weight wool or wool blend.
CONSTRUCTION: The back, fronts, and sleeves are knit separately from the bottom up to the armholes and then joined. The armholes and sleeve caps are shaped at the same time, using decreases. The sleeve caps are bound off and the fronts and back are then worked separately to shape the shoulders and back neck. The shoulders, shaped with short rows, are joined with 3-needle bind off and then seamed to the tops of the sleeves. The collar band is knit along with the fronts, joined at the center back, and sewn to the back neck. Sleeves and sides are seamed.
Salisbury Cardigan by Valerie Hobbs
What Is Being Made
The Salisbury Cardigan is a lacy knitted cardigan designed by Valerie Hobbs as the perfect lightweight layering piece for spring and warmer seasons. This garment features three-quarter length sleeves and is finished with simple twisted cord ties for closure. The cardigan is intended to be worn with minimal ease (0-2 inches) over cotton dresses, t-shirts, and jeans, offering a delicate yet practical addition to any wardrobe.
Design and Fit
The Salisbury Cardigan is available in eight sizes with finished bust measurements ranging from 37¼ inches to 53¼ inches, accommodating a wide range of body types. The length remains relatively consistent across sizes, measuring between 21¾ and 23¾ inches from shoulder to hem. This versatile sizing ensures that knitters of various dimensions can create a cardigan that fits their body perfectly.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level knitting project incorporates lacy stitch patterns throughout the garment, creating an open, airy aesthetic ideal for spring layering. The construction utilizes circular needles to accommodate the large number of stitches required for the cardigan's body. The pattern includes the creation of twisted cord ties, which serve as the closure mechanism and add a charming, handmade detail to the finished piece.
Yarn and Materials
The Salisbury Cardigan requires between 1130 and 1738 yards of DK weight yarn, depending on the chosen size. The pattern recommends Yankee Dyer Yarns "Yankee Breeze DK," a blend of 50% superwash merino wool and 50% cotton, which provides both durability and breathability perfect for a spring cardigan. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted in the Sea Glass colorway. Knitters will need 5 to 8 skeins of 100-gram yarn to complete their cardigan.
Needles and Tools
This project requires a U.S. size 5 (3.75mm) circular needle measuring 32 inches (80 centimeters) in length. The circular needle format is essential for managing the large stitch count across the cardigan's body sections while maintaining even tension throughout the knitting process.
Skill Level
The Salisbury Cardigan is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle lacy stitch patterns and garment construction with more complex shaping.
