Sagittation Scarf by Shannon Squire

What Is Being Made

The Sagittation Scarf is a summery knitted accessory designed by Shannon Squire. The name derives from the Latin word "sagitta," meaning arrow, and the finished scarf creates a bold, fluffy arrow design through strategic color work. This intermediate-level project invites knitters to mix two colors to create their own unique interpretation of the sagittation pattern, making it a customizable accessory suitable for warm-weather wear.

Techniques and Stitches Used

This knitting pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern utilizes essential stitches and abbreviations including:

  • Knit and purl stitches as the foundation of the fabric structure
  • Slip/slip/knit (ssk) decreases, which involve slipping one stitch as if to knit, slipping another stitch as if to knit, then inserting the left needle into the front of these two stitches and knitting them together
  • Slip/slip/slip/knit (sssk) decreases for additional shaping options
  • Stitch markers to track pattern repeats and maintain consistent shaping throughout the project

The two-color construction creates the arrow motif through color changes rather than complex colorwork techniques, making this an accessible project for knitters developing their skills.

Materials and Specifications

The Sagittation Scarf requires approximately 600 yards of fingering-weight yarn in two contrasting colors. The original design uses Farmer's Daughter Fibers Foxy Lady yarn, with 360 yards in Stumptown Sunrise (color A) and 240 yards in Brown (color B). Knitters will need US 4/3.5mm circular needles measuring 24 inches or longer to obtain proper gauge. Additional notions include stitch markers and a tapestry needle for finishing.
