Product Description

My husband and I spent our 10th anniversary on different continents. I was in Kenya for work and we agreed that for our anniversary I would acquire a piece of art. An art gallery in Banana Hill outside Nairobi was featuring paintings by a Ugandan artist. I settled on one titled, “Rushing Home.” The name seemed appropriate, given our separation, and it featured children dashing through the rain, sheltered under large green banana leaves, a nice tie to the name of the town I was standing in. The picture is alive – it’s all too easy to imagine the children darting back and forth, dodging traffic and rain. The slipped stitches on these toe-up socks dart and dodge in the same way. When you’re away from home, wear them and imagine rushing back.

Rushing Home Socks by Kino Knits

Project Overview

Rushing Home Socks is a beginner-friendly knitting pattern designed by Mary Hull of Kino Knits. This downloadable PDF provides instructions for creating a pair of toe-up socks inspired by a Ugandan painting featuring children sheltering under banana leaves during rainfall. The design captures the dynamic movement of the artwork through strategic use of slipped stitches that create a visual effect of darting and dodging across the fabric.

What Is Being Made

These are toe-up socks constructed from the toe upward to the calf. The pattern is suitable for everyday wear and offers an accessible introduction to sock knitting for crafters new to the technique. The socks feature a unique stitch pattern incorporating slipped stitches that echo the energetic motion depicted in the artwork that inspired the design.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Rushing Home Socks employ several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginners:

  • Toe-up construction: The socks are knitted beginning at the toe and progressing upward toward the leg, a method that allows for precise fit adjustments and eliminates the need for grafting at the toe
  • Slipped stitches: The primary stitch pattern features slipped stitches that create visual texture and movement throughout the sock, mimicking the dynamic quality of children rushing through rain in the inspiration artwork
  • Stockinette stitch: The pattern references stockinette as a comparison point, noting that the slipped stitch pattern used is less stretchy than traditional stockinette

Pattern Difficulty and Sizing

Rated as beginner difficulty, this pattern is accessible to knitters new to sock construction. The pattern notes that because the stitch pattern is less stretchy than standard stockinette stitch, crafters should choose the larger size when between two options to ensure proper fit and comfort.

Yarn and Materials

The recommended yarn for Rushing Home Socks is Yarn Indulgences Zed Soft Sock, a 4-ply weight yarn composed of 80% superwash merino wool and 20% nylon. This fiber blend provides durability, easy care through machine washing, and the softness characteristic of merino while the nylon content adds strength and longevity to the finished socks. The 4-ply weight is the standard choice for sock knitting, offering the appropriate thickness for comfortable, long-wearing footwear.

Inspiration and Design Story

The Rushing Home pattern draws its artistic inspiration from a painting by a Ugandan artist featured in a Nairobi gallery. The artwork depicts children sheltering under large green banana leaves while moving through rain, capturing a moment of dynamic motion and childhood joy. Designer Mary Hull selected this piece during a significant personal moment—her 10th anniversary spent on different continents—making the pattern a meaningful way to commemorate both the artwork and the emotional resonance of the title "Rushing Home."
