Ruffle Tank by Vanessa Cayton
What is Being Made
The Ruffle Tank is a sleeveless knitted garment designed by Vanessa Cayton as part of the sweaters and jumpers collection. This tank top features a fitted silhouette with finished measurements available in eight sizes ranging from 30 inches to 58 inches, making it suitable for a wide range of body types. The garment is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques combined with decorative stitch work to create a refined, wearable piece.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to construct the tank. The pattern uses rib stitch patterning as the primary fabric structure, which creates vertical lines of texture and provides natural stretch and recovery to the finished garment. Armhole shaping is achieved through strategic bind-offs and decreases that are carefully distributed across multiple rows to create a smooth, fitted armhole opening. The pattern includes neck finishing worked on a circular needle, allowing for a professional, seamless neckline. Increases and decreases are incorporated throughout to shape the garment at key points including the armholes and shoulders.
Stitches Used
The Ruffle Tank utilizes a focused selection of fundamental knitting stitches:
- Knit through the back loop (K1tbl) – creates a twisted stitch variation that adds textural interest
- Purl through the back loop (P1tbl) – the reverse of the knit through the back loop, used in combination to build the rib pattern
- Yarn over (yo) – an eyelet increase that adds decorative openwork and is essential for lace or ruffle elements
- Slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over (SKP) – a left-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Knit two together (K2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
The primary fabric is built on a repeating two-row sequence: a right-side row alternating purl and knit stitches, followed by a wrong-side row of purling. This creates the classic rib pattern that forms the body of the tank.
Materials and Gauge
The Ruffle Tank requires 600 to 900 yards of worsted weight yarn, depending on the finished size selected. The yardage ranges from 600 yards for the smallest size (30 inches) to 900 yards for the largest size (58 inches). Knitters will need US size 10 (6mm) straight needles for the main body of the garment and a US size 10 (6mm) 16-inch circular needle for finishing the neckline. The pattern is worked to a gauge of 4 stitches per 1 inch in the rib pattern, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. Stitch markers are required to help track pattern repeats and shaping points throughout construction.
