ROSE Cloth Knitted Washcloth
What Is Being Made
The ROSE Cloth is an exclusively designed knitted washcloth created by Ezcareknits. This finished piece measures 8 inches wide by 9 inches high, making it a practical and decorative addition to any kitchen or bathroom. The washcloth features an integrated rose motif created through strategic knit and purl stitching that forms a decorative pattern across the fabric surface.
Craft and Technique
This project is completed using the knitting craft, making it ideal for crafters of all skill levels. The design is classified as beginner-friendly, meaning it is accessible to those just starting their knitting journey while remaining engaging for more experienced knitters. The pattern uses straightforward knitting techniques combined with strategic purl stitches to create the visual rose design without requiring complex shaping or advanced maneuvers.
Stitches Used
The ROSE Cloth employs fundamental knitting stitches that form the foundation of this washcloth design:
- Knit Stitch (K): The primary stitch used throughout the pattern, creating the main fabric structure and forming the majority of the washcloth base
- Purl Stitch (P): Used strategically in combination with knit stitches to create the dimensional rose motif and decorative patterning across the cloth
The pattern alternates between knit and purl stitches in specific sequences across 43+ rows. The first 7 rows establish a garter stitch border (knitting every row), while subsequent rows introduce the purl stitches in calculated placements to form the rose design. The pattern maintains a 4-stitch garter stitch border on the sides (K4 at the beginning and end of rows) for structural stability and a finished appearance.
Materials and Tools
The ROSE Cloth is crafted from 100% cotton yarn in a medium/worsted weight, requiring a total of 76 yards of yarn. Cotton yarn is an excellent choice for washcloths as it is absorbent, durable, and easy to care for—perfect for repeated washing and everyday use.
The project requires straight knitting needles in size 7 (4.5mm), or the appropriate needle size needed to achieve proper gauge for your yarn. A darning needle is also necessary for finishing and weaving in any yarn ends upon completion.
Pattern Structure
The washcloth begins with casting on 42 stitches, establishing the width of the piece. The pattern spans 43+ rows, with the first 7 rows creating a solid knit border. From row 8 onward, the pattern introduces the rose motif through alternating right-side rows (where the decorative purl stitches appear) and wrong-side rows (worked as K4, P34, K4 to maintain the border). The rose design gradually develops across the middle section of the cloth through carefully positioned purl stitches that create visual depth and dimension when viewed from the finished side.
