Ronni Women's Top Knitting Pattern by Debbie Bliss in Piper Yarn
The Ronni top is a beautifully textured women's knitting pattern designed by Debbie Bliss, worked in her Piper DK weight yarn. This intermediate-level pattern produces a fitted, ribbed top featuring a distinctive travelling eyelet detail that creates a subtle, elegant visual movement across the fabric. The design is available in four sizes to fit bust measurements of 86–92 cm, 97–102 cm, 107–112 cm, and 117–122 cm (34–36 in through 46–48 in), with finished bust measurements ranging from 103 cm to 123 cm (40½ in to 48½ in) and lengths to shoulder of 50 cm to 56 cm (19¾ in to 22 in).
Construction Method
The Ronni top is constructed using a bottom-up, worked flat, seamed approach. Each piece — back and front — is knitted flat on straight needles and then joined with seams to create the finished garment. This traditional construction method gives knitters full control over tension and shaping at each stage, and makes it straightforward to measure and block individual pieces before assembly.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This pattern makes use of a range of interesting and satisfying techniques that place it firmly in the intermediate difficulty category. Knitters should be comfortable with ribbing, yarn-forward eyelet construction, and combined decrease and increase shaping before beginning.
- 2 x 1 Rib (k1, p2 rib): The main fabric of the top is worked in a k1, p2 rib pattern, which gives the garment its characteristic stretch and close-fitting silhouette. Tension is measured over this rib pattern when moderately stretched.
- Travelling Eyelets: The most distinctive feature of the Ronni top is a column of travelling eyelets that move progressively towards the left-hand side on every right-side row. This is achieved by combining skpo (slip one, knit one, pass slipped stitch over) decreases and yf (yarn forward) increases in a carefully choreographed sequence, creating an elegant diagonal lace-like line through the ribbed fabric.
- skpo (slip one, knit one, pass slipped stitch over): Used both as a shaping decrease and as part of the travelling eyelet construction on right-side rows.
- kp (k1, p1 into the same stitch) and pfkb (purl into front and knit into back): These paired increase techniques are used to maintain stitch count while the eyelet column travels across the fabric, and to manage the transition between rib sections.
- Single rib and combined rib sections: The pattern transitions between k1, p2 rib and k1, p1 single rib at different points, particularly around the eyelet column, requiring careful attention to the stitch pattern on both right-side and wrong-side rows.
- Back neck and shoulder shaping: Standard seamed shaping is worked to create a neat neckline and shoulder line.
- Yarn forward (yf): Used to create the open eyelet holes that form the travelling decorative column.
Reading the Pattern
On right-side rows, the shaping and eyelet movement are created simultaneously: an skpo is worked at the beginning of the eyelet zone, a kp increase is worked into the last knit stitch before the eyelet, a k1 is worked into the eyelet stitch itself, a yf creates the new eyelet, and another skpo closes the sequence directly after. The remainder of the row continues in the established p2, k1 rib. On wrong-side rows, the ribs are maintained as set, with [p1, k1] worked into the skpo and yf eyelet positions to keep the fabric consistent. Knitters are advised to take length measurements over the k1, p2 rib section to the left of the travelling eyelets for accuracy.
