What is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern set includes a Beltaine Cardigan and coordinating romper designs for babies and toddlers. The cardigan is available in five sizes ranging from 3 months to 2 years, with finished chest measurements from 48 cm (19 inches) to 62.5 cm (24½ inches) and lengths from 25 cm (10 inches) to 35.5 cm (14 inches). The set provides complete instructions for creating a coordinated outfit suitable for infants and young children.
Techniques Used
The Beltaine Cardigan employs yoke construction, a popular technique in modern knitting that begins with a fitted yoke at the shoulders and increases outward to create the body and sleeves in a seamless or minimal-seaming approach. This method is efficient and creates a well-fitted garment. The pattern uses top-down knitting, allowing knitters to try on the piece as it progresses and adjust length as needed. Sleeve shaping and body shaping are incorporated throughout the yoke length, which ranges from 13 cm to 15.5 cm depending on size.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches including:
- Stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) - the primary fabric stitch
- Garter stitch (knit every row) - likely used for borders, edgings, or textural elements
- Decreases including ssk (slip, slip, knit) for shaping the yoke and sleeve cap
- Slip markers for tracking pattern repeats and construction sections
Materials Required
The Beltaine Cardigan is designed to be knitted with Rico Essentials Merino DK extra fine superwash yarn in Caramel (colorway 68). This yarn provides 120 meters (131 yards) per 50-gram ball. The designer notes that while labeled as DK/8ply, the yarn knits closer to a Sports weight. Yardage requirements vary by size:
- Size A (3 months): 3 balls / 145 grams / 350 metres
- Size B (6 months): 4 balls / 170 grams / 410 metres
- Size C (12 months): 4 balls / 190 grams / 455 metres
- Size D (18 months): 5 balls / 230 grams / 550 metres
- Size E (2 years): 6 balls / 260 grams / 625 metres
The pattern requires appropriate knitting needles suitable for 4-ply and DK weight yarns, though specific needle sizes are referenced in the complete pattern documentation.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The yoke construction method and shaping techniques require understanding of increases, decreases, and pattern reading, but the fundamental stitches remain accessible to developing knitters.
