What Is Being Made
The Roll With It Shawl is a half-pi shaped knit shawl designed by Susanne Talluri for Handmade By Zan Designs. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished shawl measuring 54 inches, making it an elegant accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a wrap. The half-pi construction provides a versatile shape that drapes beautifully when worn.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting pattern incorporates a diverse range of techniques, making it an excellent project for knitters looking to expand their skillset. The shawl features multiple construction methods including:
- Garter stitch sections for textured, reversible fabric
- Lace work created through yarn overs and decreases for an openwork design
- Brioche knitting techniques for dimensional, elastic fabric
- Striped colorwork using main color and contrast color throughout the design
- Picot bind off finishing technique for a decorative, finished edge
Stitches and Abbreviations
The Roll With It Shawl uses fundamental knitting stitches combined with specialized techniques. Core stitches include knit (k), purl (p), and yarn overs (yo) for lace creation. Advanced stitches featured in this pattern are:
- Brioche knit (brk): knitting a stitch together with its yarn over for a lifted, textured effect
- Brioche purl (brp): purling a stitch together with its yarn over
- Kfb (knit front and back): increasing by knitting into the front and back of the same stitch
- Sl1yo (slip 1, yarn over): slipping a stitch with a yarn over for lace shaping
- Wyif (with yarn in front): holding yarn in front of work for purl-wise movements
Stitch markers are optional but recommended for tracking lace repeats throughout the pattern.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Roll With It Shawl is worked in fingering weight yarn, a delicate 4-ply yarn weight that creates intricate stitch definition ideal for showcasing lace and brioche techniques. The sample shawl uses approximately 2 skeins of Handmade By Zan Silk Sock yarn:
- Main Color (MC): Flower, 437 yards (399 m)
- Contrast Color (CC): Mauvelous, 437 yards (399 m)
Total yardage for the sample is approximately 874 yards. Knitters should note that gauge will affect yardage usage, so yarn requirements may vary based on individual gauge and tension.
Needles and Tools
This pattern requires US 6 (4.0 mm) circular needles in a 32-inch to 40-inch length to accommodate all stitches as the shawl expands. Circular needles are essential for this half-pi construction, allowing stitches to be distributed comfortably. Additional supplies include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and optional stitch markers for tracking lace repeats.
Gauge Information
The recommended gauge for the Roll With It Shawl is 2 inches equals 18 rows and 12 stitches in garter stitch when blocked. However, the pattern notes that gauge is not critical to success, though it will affect total yardage consumption. Knitters working at a tighter or looser gauge should adjust yarn quantities accordingly.
