Robyn Curved Garter Stitch Wrap
What Is Being Made
The Robyn is a gently curved wrap designed by Jennifer Lee, perfect for adding layered warmth and style to any outfit. This shawl measures 40cm wide by 200cm long at its longest edge, making it a versatile accessory that drapes beautifully around the shoulders. The wrap's elegant curve is achieved through strategic short-row shaping rather than complex stitch patterns, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking understated sophistication.
Techniques Used
This wrap employs short-row shaping as its primary construction technique to create the signature gentle curve. Short rows involve knitting partway across the row, then turning and working back without completing the full row width. This creates graduated increases in length across the wrap's width, resulting in the curved silhouette. The pattern uses a specific turning method where yarn is managed carefully during the turn to prevent visible holes, with instructions to take the working yarn under the needle to the front of work before slipping stitches and returning the yarn to its original position.
Stitches Used
Garter stitch is the sole stitch pattern used throughout this wrap. Garter stitch is created by knitting every row, whether working flat or in the round. This fundamental stitch produces a dense, textured fabric with horizontal ridges on both sides, offering excellent drape and visual interest without requiring complex stitch manipulation. The simplicity of garter stitch allows the focus to remain on the wrap's elegant curved shape while remaining accessible to beginner knitters.
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: The pattern calls for Panda Soufflé 8ply, a DK-weight yarn, requiring 5 balls (approximately 625 meters total) in the first color and 3 balls (approximately 375 meters total) in the second color. The 8ply designation indicates a medium-weight yarn suitable for creating fabric with good structure and drape. Total yardage needed is approximately 1,000 meters. Quantities may vary depending on individual knitting tension and yarn characteristics.
Needles: A pair of 4.00mm knitting needles (UK size 8, US size 6) are required for this project. A wool needle is also needed for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
Tension: The pattern specifies a tension of 21 stitches and 43 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over garter stitch using 4.00mm needles. Notably, tension is not considered crucial for this project, allowing for greater flexibility and making it particularly forgiving for knitters still developing consistent gauge.
Pattern Difficulty and Suitability
Rated as a beginner level pattern, the Robyn wrap is designed to be accessible to knitters new to the craft while still producing a sophisticated finished garment. The use of a single stitch (garter stitch) combined with straightforward short-row techniques makes this an excellent project for building foundational skills in shaping and garment construction without overwhelming complexity.
