Product Description

Is there anything more comforting than the sweet and nutty smell of roasting chestnuts in late fall? For many years, my mother and I used to visit New York City the weekend before Thanksgiving. As soon as weâd step off the bus that deep smoky scent from the nut cart would fill our senses and make a great big city seem much smaller and more welcoming.

This tri-fold pillow design was inspired by the rich color and bumpy texture from freshly roasted chestnuts. The pillow is worked flat with buttons in the back for closure. The front panel features an all over cable pattern. The bottom back panel is worked in double rib. The top back panel is worked in stockinette stitch divided by three cables. The sides are seamed with a one-inch overlap.

The Roasted Chestnuts pattern was formerly known as the "Flurry and Frost Pillow" from November 2014 Euniceâs Choice club subscription pattern from Three Irish Girls.

Roasted Chestnuts Knit Cushion Cover by Meg Roke

What Is Being Made

Roasted Chestnuts is a knitted cushion cover design by independent designer Meg Roke. This project creates a decorative pillow cover measuring approximately 16" x 16" [40 cm x 40 cm] after seaming, with an unbuttoned length of 34" [85 cm]. The design features a button closure for easy insertion and removal of a standard pillow insert.

Yarn and Materials

This knitting pattern calls for approximately 710 yards of DK weight yarn. The recommended yarn is Springvale DK by Three Irish Girls, a superwash merino wool blend offering 270 yards per 3.5 oz skein, requiring 3 skeins total. Crafters may substitute any DK weight yarn of similar yardage and fiber content. Additional materials include a 16" x 16" pillow insert, 5 medium buttons ranging from 5/8" to 1" in diameter, and basic finishing supplies including scissors and a tapestry needle.

Needles and Tools

The pattern is worked on US 6 (4 mm) needles, available in either straight or circular needle styles according to crafter preference. Stitch markers are optional but may assist in tracking pattern repeats. A cable needle is required for executing the cable stitch techniques featured in the design.

Stitches and Techniques

Roasted Chestnuts employs cable stitch patterns as the primary decorative element. The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches including knit, purl, yarn overs for lace elements, and decreases such as knit 2 together (k2tog) and purl 2 together (p2tog). Cable techniques are executed using a cable needle to create the characteristic twisted rope-like texture.

Additional techniques include casting on, binding off, slipping stitches, and working in the round or flat depending on needle choice. The pattern incorporates right side and wrong side row designations for proper stitch orientation.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

The pattern is designed to achieve a gauge of 28 stitches and 34 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in cable stitch pattern using US 6 needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the finished measurements of 16" x 16" [40 cm x 40 cm] after seaming.

Construction Details

The cushion cover features a button band closure with 5 buttons spaced along the opening edge, allowing the cover to wrap around a standard pillow insert. The pattern requires seaming to complete the three-dimensional cushion form. This design combines both aesthetic cable work with functional button closures for a polished, finished cushion accessory.
