Product Description
Rita is named after the famous Jamaican reggae star Bob Marley’s wife. The bright colourful rainbow reminded me of reggae colours but, despite pressure from my husband and a good friend of ours, I decided Bob was not a good name for a blanket J
Rita is a scrap blanket; to get the full impact of the colour changes you will need at least 14 different colours.
The blanket needs 1400 gms of 4 ply/fingering wool (360/400 metres per 100 gms).
Crochet hook in size 3mm, or size needed for your tension.
A tapestry needle for sewing in ends.

Rita Crochet Blanket by Amanda Perkins
Project Overview
Rita is a downloadable crochet blanket pattern designed by Amanda Perkins. This intermediate-level project is a scrap blanket that celebrates vibrant colour changes through the use of multiple yarn colours. The blanket is named after Rita Marley, drawing inspiration from reggae colour palettes and creating a visually striking finished piece suitable for crafters with some crochet experience.
What Is Being Made
The Rita Crochet Blanket is a colourful throw blanket designed to showcase yarn scraps and multiple colours. To achieve the full visual impact of the design, the pattern requires at least 14 different colours of yarn worked throughout the project. This makes it an excellent pattern for using up leftover yarn from other projects while creating a coordinated, rainbow-inspired finished blanket.
Yarn Requirements and Materials
The complete blanket requires 1400 grams of 4 ply or sport weight yarn, with each 100-gram skein providing approximately 360 to 400 metres of yardage. A minimum of 14 different colours is needed to achieve the intended colour-change effect throughout the blanket.
Recommended yarn brands and specific products include:
- Easyknits: Splendour, Cherish, Smoke, Big Boy Skein
- Queen: Selkino, Lustrous, Luminosity, Oasis Grande
- John Arbon Textiles: Exmoor Sock, Harvest Hues
- The Little Grey Sheep: Stein 4 ply, Gotland 4 Ply
- Fyberspates: Vivacious 4 ply, Scrumptious 4 ply
- Cascade: Heritage Silk, Cascade 220 Fingering
- Drops: Alpaca
- Knitpicks: Palette Yarn
- King Cole: Merino Blend 4ply
Essential tools include a 3mm crochet hook (or the size required to achieve proper tension with your chosen yarn) and a tapestry needle for finishing and weaving in ends.
Difficulty Level and Techniques
The Rita Crochet Blanket is classified as an intermediate-level project, making it suitable for crocheters who have progressed beyond beginner basics and are comfortable with fundamental crochet techniques. The intermediate difficulty suggests the pattern incorporates stitch variations and colour-work techniques that require solid foundational crochet skills.
Craft and Stitching Approach
This is a crochet project that utilizes the scrap-blanket construction method. The design strategy involves working with multiple yarn colours throughout the piece to create the distinctive rainbow effect. The use of at least 14 different colours means crocheters will be changing yarns regularly, making this pattern ideal for stash busting and creating a coordinated, multi-coloured finished blanket from yarn scraps.
