Product Description
The Ringwood Sock pattern contains two separate patterns, one to knit the socks from the cuff down, the other to knit them from the toe up. They have a traditional gusset and slip stitch heel. These are designed for beginner sock knitters; a simple construction with a little pattern for interest and texture that works great in solid, semi-solid and variegated yarns. They are knit in one piece in the round on double pointed needles. Full instructions are provided for Kitchener stitching the toe together for the cuff down version and stretchy cast offs for the toe up version.
These socks draw on my Grandmothers ‘signature’ stitch. Whilst not a sock knitter she was a prodigious knitter of mittens and gloves using the local Ringwood stitch pattern. Ringwood is about 20 miles from where I grew up and in Victorian times was the centre of a cottage industry knitting gloves with this stitch pattern.
Ringwood Socks by Tess Young
What is Being Made
Ringwood Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks designed by independent designer Tess Young. The pattern offers two construction methods—toe-up and cuff-down—allowing knitters to choose their preferred approach. The socks are available in two sizes: Small (UK shoe sizes 3-5, EU 34-37, US 5-7) and Medium (UK shoe sizes 6-8, EU 38-42, US 8-10). This design draws inspiration from a traditional Ringwood glove pattern, a historic knitting style from the Ringwood area, which was a centre of cottage industry glove knitting during Victorian times. The pattern incorporates the designer's grandmother's signature stitch, adapted here for sock construction.
Techniques and Stitches Used
The Ringwood Socks pattern features a simple yet effective 3-row stitch pattern that is applied to both the heel flap and gusset sections of the sock. This stitch pattern is the defining characteristic of the design, creating visual interest and texture throughout the garment. The pattern is suitable for intermediate-level knitters, making it accessible to those with foundational knitting skills who are ready to tackle heel and gusset construction. The use of a repeating 3-row motif provides rhythm and structure while remaining manageable for the skill level.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Ringwood Socks pattern calls for Malabrigo Sock fingering yarn in a single 100g skein, which provides 440 yards (402 metres) of yarn—sufficient yardage for one pair of socks. The yarn weight is 3-ply, a lightweight fingering-weight yarn ideal for sock knitting. Knitters will need 2.25mm (US1) needles, with the option to work on either double-pointed needles (dpns) or two circular needles, depending on personal preference. Additional materials include a tapestry or sewing-up needle for finishing and weaving in ends, and two stitch markers (optional) to help track pattern repeats and construction sections.
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 34 stitches by 56 rows over 10cm x 10cm (4 x 4 inches) when working the stitch pattern on 2.25mm (US1) needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper sock fit, particularly in the foot circumference and length.
