Product Description
Riley Rose Hat is a 5-colored slouchy hat based on the stitch patterns in my Riley Rose shawl. It is an easy to knit hat project where the stitch patterns and colors change just often enough to keep you from getting bored! Pairs well with the Riley Rose Shawl & Cowl.
The hat is meant to be worn with 2 inches of negative ease. The finished hat is very stretchy. The sample shown in knit in size Teen (17 inch circumference) on a 21 inch head and fits very comfortably. If you like a snug fit and are unsure, I’d recommend sizing down.
If you prefer less slouch, you can reduce the number of ribbing rounds at the beginning of the hat.
This pattern has been test knit & tech edited so you can have confidence in the instructions.
Riley Rose Hat by Jennifer Lassonde
What is Being Made
The Riley Rose Hat is a knitted hat designed to coordinate with the Riley Rose Cowl & Shawl patterns. Named after the designer's niece Riley, this hat features a design aesthetic that reflects varied interests through its patterned construction. The pattern offers multiple sizing options to accommodate different head sizes, ranging from Tween through Adult XL.
Craft and Construction Method
This is a knitting project worked in the round from the bottom up. The hat is constructed using circular and/or double-pointed needles, allowing for seamless construction. The design switches yarns during construction, incorporating the multi-color elements of the Riley Rose colorway throughout the piece. The hat is finished with gentle blocking to achieve proper gauge and shape.
Stitches and Techniques
The Riley Rose Hat primarily uses stockinette stitch worked in the round as its foundation stitch. The pattern incorporates color changes and varied patterning throughout the design, creating visual interest that reflects the designer's intention of "skipping around like the patterns in this design." The construction method and stitch work make this suitable for beginner-level knitters.
Gauge and Sizing
The required gauge is 32 stitches and 36 rounds over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch in the round after gentle blocking. Accurate gauge is essential for proper fit across all available sizes: Tween, Teen, Adult XS, Adult S, Adult M, Adult L, and Adult XL.
Yarn and Materials
Yarn: Holly Press Fibers Sheepish Mini Set in the Riley Rose Reindeer Colorway. This is a set of 5 mini skeins composed of 75% Superwash Merino and 25% Nylon in fingering weight. Each mini skein contains 92 yards (84 meters) and weighs 20 grams. The specific yardage required varies by size.
Needles: US 2 (2.75 mm) and US 3 (3.25 mm) circular and/or double-pointed needles, or the size needed to obtain the specified gauge.
Notions: One stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends. Blocking pins are recommended for finishing.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it accessible to knitters new to hat construction and in-the-round knitting techniques. The straightforward stockinette stitch base combined with the structured construction method provides an excellent introduction to circular knitting.
