Riley Blake Crayon Box Mini Quilt – Free Downloadable PDF Pattern Summary

The Riley Blake Crayon Box Mini is a charming and beginner-friendly quilted throw pattern designed by Riley Blake Designs. The finished quilt measures 28½" x 39", making it an ideal small-format project — perfect as a lap quilt, a child's blanket, a wall hanging, or a decorative accent piece. The pattern is available as a free downloadable PDF, making it an accessible starting point for new quilters and a fun quick project for experienced makers.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a miniature quilt featuring a row of stylized crayon blocks, each one pieced to resemble a classic wax crayon complete with a pointed top and a flat base. There are 10 individual Crayon Blocks in the design, each finished at 3½" x 17", arranged together to create a colorful, graphic quilt top. The overall effect mimics a fresh box of crayons standing side by side — a playful, visually striking design that appeals to children and color lovers alike.

Fabric and Materials

The pattern is specifically designed to showcase Confetti Cottons in Crayola™ Colors, an officially licensed fabric collection from Riley Blake Designs produced in collaboration with the iconic Crayola™ brand. The collection features solid-colored quilting cottons in the recognizable, saturated hues associated with Crayola crayons. Each of the 10 crayon blocks is cut from a different Crayola solid 4" x 17½" rectangle, representing a distinct crayon color. A black solid fabric is used for the Serpentine accent pieces that form the decorative top and base of each crayon shape, adding bold graphic contrast to the design.

  • Primary fabric: Confetti Cottons in Crayola™ Colors by Riley Blake Designs (solid quilting cotton)
  • Accent fabric: Black solid quilting cotton for Serpentine pieces
  • Seam allowance: ¼" throughout

Techniques Used

Foundation Piecing and Block Construction

Each Crayon Block is constructed in distinct sections — a Crayon Base, a Crayon Body, and a Crayon Top — which are assembled separately and then joined. This structured, sectional approach is characteristic of foundation piecing methodology and helps beginner quilters achieve clean, accurate results even when working with angled or shaped pieces.

Appliqué

The pattern instructs quilters to use their preferred method of appliqué to attach the black solid Serpentine pieces — two tops and two bottoms — to each Crayola solid rectangle to form the Crayon Base. This flexible instruction allows makers to choose from a variety of appliqué approaches, including fusible web appliqué, needle-turn appliqué, or machine satin stitch appliqué, depending on their skill level and preferred finish. Appliqué is a foundational quilting embellishment technique in which fabric shapes are sewn onto a background fabric to create decorative detail.

Piecing with Right Sides Together

Standard quilting construction is used throughout, with all seams sewn right sides together unless otherwise noted. The Crayon Top section of each block is created by stitching one Crayon Top Side and one Crayon Top Side Reversed to either side of a Crayola solid Crayon Top Center piece, forming the angled, pointed tip of each crayon. This mirrored piecing technique creates the distinctive tapered crayon point and is repeated for all 10 color blocks.

Row Construction

Once all 10 individual Crayon Blocks are complete, they are arranged and sewn together in a row format to create the full quilt top. Row-based quilt construction is a straightforward and beginner-friendly method that simplifies the assembly process by breaking the quilt into manageable horizontal or vertical strips.
