Riley Blake Bohemian Brights Quilt – Free Downloadable PDF Pattern
The Riley Blake Bohemian Brights Quilt is a vibrant, on-trend patchwork quilt pattern released as a free downloadable PDF by Riley Blake Designs in collaboration with Liberty Fabrics. The finished quilt measures a generous 54⅝" x 54⅝", making it a versatile lap or throw size suitable for display or everyday use. Rated as an intermediate quilting project, it is ideal for quilters who are comfortable with basic patchwork construction and are ready to work with diagonal row assembly and on-point block settings.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a single, stunning square quilt built from 13 identical patchwork blocks, each composed of 16 smaller fabric squares arranged in a 4×4 grid. The blocks are set on point — rotated 45 degrees — and separated by setting triangles, creating a dynamic diagonal layout that gives the finished quilt its lively, bohemian energy. A pieced border frames the quilt center, and the overall design celebrates bold, clashing color combinations characteristic of the Bohemian Brights aesthetic.
Design Details and Block Construction
Each of the 13 blocks finishes at 11½" x 11½" (including seam allowances). To construct a single block, 16 squares of the A pieces — each cut at 3¼" — are selected from a variety of prints and arranged in four rows of four. The rows are sewn together to complete the block. Varying the prints across the 16 squares within each block is encouraged, and the pattern deliberately cuts extra squares to give quilters maximum flexibility when mixing and matching fabrics.
- Block size (unfinished): 11½" x 11½"
- A squares: 3¼" cut from fat quarter strips
- Total A squares cut: 210 (208 used in the quilt)
- Blocks required: 13
Quilt Center and On-Point Setting
Once all 13 blocks are complete, they are joined with B and C setting triangles in diagonal rows — a hallmark of on-point quilt construction. The B and C triangles are intentionally cut slightly oversized to allow for easy alignment and accurate trimming. After the diagonal rows are sewn together, the quilt center is squared up by trimming the excess fabric, leaving a ¼" seam allowance on all sides, resulting in a trimmed quilt center of 47⅛" x 47⅛". This squaring-up step is an important intermediate technique that ensures the borders will attach evenly.
Borders
The quilt center is framed with at least two borders. Border 2 is cut from Sunny Afternoon C fabric as 6 strips measuring 3½" x width of fabric (WOF). The borders add visual structure and bring the finished quilt to its full 54⅝" x 54⅝" dimension. All measurements throughout the pattern include the standard quilting ¼" seam allowance.
Techniques Used
- Patchwork block construction — assembling multiple small squares into a larger block unit
- On-point / diagonal setting — rotating blocks 45° and joining them with side and corner setting triangles for a dynamic layout
- Diagonal row assembly — sewing blocks and triangles together in angled rows before joining rows
- Squaring up — trimming the assembled quilt center to exact dimensions before adding borders
- Strip cutting and sub-cutting — cutting fat quarter yardage into strips and then into individual squares for efficient fabric use
- Border attachment — adding framing strips to complete the quilt top
- Binding — finishing the quilt edges with fabric cut from Fluttering Floral B
Stitches and Sewing Methods
