Product Description
2 Patterns included - one is in US crochet terms and one in British crochet terms. As it is very difficult to see stitches in dark colors, the pattern is made using a light color yarn. Medium Worsted Weight yarn is required Aran Weight for Britain, 10 Ply for Australia and a 4 mm Crochet Hook US G / 6, Britain 8. A simple technique for the crown is used that will ensure a nice strong flat top which Riding Hats normally have. There are lots of photos to guide you. The pattern requires SC and FPSC Front Post Single Crochet, fully explained for those that do not know how and would like to learn. Please see the video on my Youtube channel to see how to FPSC. A tighter stitch is also required.
The pattern is written in English one using standard American terms another using British terms using Yarn Industry Standard Abbreviations such as INC for increase, DEC for decrease. If you need help, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I am always happy to help.
Riding Hat #150 by Meadowvale Studio
What is Being Made
The Riding Hat #150 is a crocheted hat design created by independent designer Meadowvale Studio. This intermediate-level crochet project produces a finished hat suitable for riding activities, combining functional design with handmade craftsmanship.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs advanced crochet techniques that go beyond basic stitches, requiring intermediate-level skill and familiarity with directional stitch variations. The pattern includes comprehensive instruction on multiple front and back post techniques, which are essential for creating textured, dimensional fabric.
The techniques covered in this pattern include:
- Front Post Single Crochet (FPSC) — worked both in flat pieces and in the round
- Front Post Half Double Crochet (FPHDC)
- Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC)
- Back Post Single Crochet (BPSC)
- Back Post Half Double Crochet (BPHDC)
- Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC)
The pattern provides detailed step-by-step instructions for executing front post stitches when working flat pieces, including proper hook insertion, yarn manipulation, and loop management. Instructions are also included for working these same techniques in circular construction, allowing the crocheter to create seamless rounds.
Stitches Used
The primary stitches featured in this pattern are post stitches — variations that work around the post (vertical part) of stitches from previous rows rather than into the top loops. These include single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet variations worked from both the front and back post positions. The pattern also incorporates foundational single crochet (SC) and chain (CH) stitches as base construction elements.
Materials and Tools
This crochet pattern is designed to be worked with worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that works up quickly and provides good stitch definition for the textured post stitches featured throughout the design. A crochet hook appropriate for worsted weight yarn is required, though the specific hook size is detailed within the downloadable pattern PDF.
Pattern Format
The Riding Hat #150 is available as a downloadable PDF, allowing immediate access to complete pattern instructions, stitch diagrams, and technique tutorials. The pattern references instructional video content available through Meadowvale Studio's YouTube channel, providing visual guidance for the post stitch techniques used in construction.
