Ridge & Eyelet Summer Top by Pat Menchini
What is Being Made
The Ridge & Eyelet Summer Top is a knitted garment designed as a lightweight, warm-weather piece. This pattern offers six size options to fit bust measurements ranging from 76–81 cm (30–32 inches) through to 127–132 cm (50–52 inches), with actual finished bust measurements between 86 cm (34 inches) and 137 cm (54 inches). The top features a classic summer silhouette with short sleeves measuring between 11–14 cm (4½–5½ inches) in length, and body length to the start of shoulder shaping ranging from approximately 51–55 cm (20¼–21¾ inches).
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create visual interest and texture. The garment incorporates ridge detailing and eyelet stitch patterns, which are characteristic features that define the design aesthetic. Ridge stitches create raised horizontal lines across the fabric, while eyelet stitches form small decorative holes that add both visual appeal and breathability—ideal qualities for a summer top. The combination of these techniques requires intermediate knitting skills and an understanding of how to execute stitch variations while maintaining consistent tension throughout the project.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is built on stocking stitch, which forms the foundation of the garment. This fundamental knit stitch creates a smooth, classic fabric surface. The design is enhanced through the incorporation of ridge stitches and eyelet stitches, which are worked into the stocking stitch base to create texture and decorative patterning. These stitch variations are strategically placed to achieve the distinctive Ridge & Eyelet aesthetic that characterizes this top.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Ridge & Eyelet Summer Top is designed to be worked in King Cole Drifter 4 Ply yarn in the shade Bluebell 4235. This 4-ply weight yarn provides a lightweight, breathable fabric suitable for warm weather wear. Each 100g ball contains 400 metres (437 yards) of yarn. Yarn requirements vary by size: the smallest size requires 3 balls, sizes two and three require 3 and 4 balls respectively, while the larger sizes require 4, 5, and 5 balls of yarn.
Knitting Needles Required
The pattern calls for three different needle sizes to achieve proper tension and construction:
- 2.75 mm needles (UK size 12, US size 2) – used for ribbing or edge work
- 3 mm needles (UK size 11, US size 2½) – used for specific stitch sections
- 3.25 mm needles (UK size 10, US size 3) – the primary needle size for the main body in stocking stitch
Tension and Gauge
Achieving the correct tension is critical for this project. The pattern specifies a tension of 28 stitches and 36 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch using 3.25 mm needles. Knitters are strongly advised to test their tension before beginning the project, as variations in tension can significantly affect the finished garment size and fit. If your tension is too loose or too tight, adjusting needle size accordingly will help you achieve the specified measurements.
