Product Description
This is a fairly simple curved wrap, made up of a two-row repeat, including increases which create the curve. Beginner crocheters could manage this one - knowledge of basic stitches, plus front - and back post double crochet is required.
I made this one using Kartopu Love Cotton Prints, which is 100% cotton, but cotton blends would also work nicely, too (though you are welcome to experiment with any yarn you like, really). I had no luck finding an equivalent yarn that I can suggest you use - it is supposed to be a fingering (4 ply) yarn but is rated at 16 sts/4" (10cm), which is clearly incorrect. So try a fingering or sport (5 ply) yarn in a cotton or cotton blend and see how you go. You can also make it deeper by crocheting more rows.
The wrap is photographed on a size 16(UK, AU)/14(US) mannequin, and you can see there is fabric to spare, so should fit larger ladies without a hassle.
Ribbed Wrap by Artefacts
What Is Being Made
The Ribbed Wrap is a crocheted shawl designed by Melody Tallon, created as a downloadable PDF pattern. This wrap features a generous lower edge length of approximately 100 inches (255 centimeters) with a depth of 12 inches (30 centimeters), making it a substantial accessory suitable for layering or draping. The design emphasizes textured ribbing created through strategic post stitch placement, resulting in a visually interesting fabric with dimensional appeal.
Craft and Techniques
This project is worked entirely in crochet, classified as an intermediate-level pattern. The Ribbed Wrap utilizes post stitches as its primary technique—specifically front post double crochet (fpdc) and back post double crochet (bpdc) stitches. These post stitches are worked around the body of stitches from the previous row rather than into the top loops, creating the characteristic ribbed texture. The pattern begins with a foundation chain and builds outward, allowing crafters to customize their finished size based on personal preference. The designer notes that tension is not crucial for this project; crafters can adjust hook size to achieve their desired aesthetic without affecting the pattern's success.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch): Foundation stitch used to begin the wrap
- Single crochet (sc): Basic short stitch for structure
- Half double crochet (hdc): Medium-height stitch providing moderate drape
- Double crochet (dc): Tall stitch used throughout the pattern as a base for post stitches
- Foundation double crochet (fdc): Creates a finished foundation edge
- Front post double crochet (fpdc): Worked around the front of stitches to create raised ribbed texture
- Back post double crochet (bpdc): Worked around the back of stitches to create recessed ribbed texture
- Slip stitch (sl st): Used for joining and finishing
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Ribbed Wrap requires 3 balls of 100-gram Kartopu Love Cotton Prints yarn in a 4-ply weight. This cotton yarn selection provides a breathable, drape-friendly fabric ideal for a wrap's intended use. A 4.5mm (size 8) crochet hook is recommended for working with this yarn weight, though the pattern explicitly states that hook size can be adjusted based on personal preference and desired stitch appearance. A tapestry needle is required for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
