Product Description

A soft pliable ribbed cowl, using contrasting textured yarns. This pattern is worked on circular needles, which creates the permanent twisted effect without any seam. It is also possible to create this item without using circular needles, or using circular needles working back and forth on the needles rather than working “in the round”. In this option, the cowl must be joined with a seam.

Rib Twist Cowl by Jo Sharp

What is Being Made

The Rib Twist Cowl is a softly draped ribbed cowl designed by Jo Sharp. This accessory features contrasting bands created through the use of different yarn types and shades, resulting in a reversible design that can be worn with either side facing outward. The cowl measures approximately 23cm in depth when completed, making it a versatile neckwear piece suitable for layering or standalone wear.

Techniques Used

This cowl employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance and structure. The primary technique is knitting in the round, which creates a seamless tubular fabric ideal for cowls and neck accessories. The pattern incorporates a signature twist construction that is central to the design—knitters deliberately twist the cast-on stitches by manipulating the needles so that some stitches have bulk above while others have bulk below. This twist is then locked in place as knitting progresses, creating a permanent spiral or twist within the cowl structure.

The cowl can be executed using two different needle configurations: circular needles for the primary method or straight needles as an alternative approach (Version 2). The pattern also involves color work through the use of contrasting yarn types and shades, with transitions between colors (referred to as Col 1 and Col 2) occurring at specific measurement points during construction.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern throughout this cowl is rib stitch, which creates vertical columns of texture and provides excellent elasticity and recovery. The rib pattern is maintained consistently across the majority of the cowl's depth, beginning after the initial cast-on and continuing until the final measurements are reached. The rib structure contributes to both the visual appeal and the functional drape of the finished piece.

Materials

The Rib Twist Cowl is designed to showcase Jo Sharp New Era Merino DK Superwash and Jo Sharp Silkroad DK Tweed yarns, which are used in contrasting combinations to create the visual interest of the design. Both yarns are DK weight (double knitting weight), classified as varied yarn weight in this pattern. The cowl is worked on 7.00mm needles, which are appropriately sized for DK weight yarn and create the soft drape characteristic of the finished piece. The pattern accommodates both circular needles and straight needles depending on the knitter's preference and available tools.

Pattern Characteristics

Classified as a beginner difficulty project, the Rib Twist Cowl is described as "easy quick knitting," making it an accessible pattern for those new to knitting or seeking a straightforward project. Despite its beginner-friendly classification, the pattern produces a sophisticated finished garment through the clever use of contrasting yarns and the distinctive twist technique. The reversible nature of the cowl adds practical value, as it can be worn in multiple ways. Finishing instructions include casting off loosely and darning in ends carefully to maintain the reversible quality of the piece.
