Rib Interrupted: A Broken Rib Pullover by Trudie Joseph
What is Being Made
Rib Interrupted is a pullover sweater featuring a distinctive broken rib stitch pattern. This design offers eight size options ranging from 34¾ inches to 63 inches in bust measurement, with 2 inches of intended positive ease built into the finished measurements. The pullover is designed as a versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions and body types.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create its finished structure. The garment is worked in the round using circular needles, which allows for seamless construction and efficient knitting. The pattern incorporates the three-needle bind-off technique for finishing, which creates a strong, professional seam. The ssk (slip, slip, knit) decrease is used throughout the pattern for shaping and stitch manipulation. Small circumference sections are accommodated through the use of double-pointed needles (DPNs) as an alternative to circular needles, giving knitters flexibility in their preferred construction method.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch feature of this design is the broken rib pattern, which creates visual interest by interrupting traditional ribbing sequences. The broken rib technique combines knit and purl stitches in a modified arrangement that differs from standard 1x1 or 2x2 ribbing, resulting in a textured fabric with both elasticity and dimensional appeal. The ssk decrease is employed for shaping the armholes, neckline, and other areas requiring decreases. Standard stockinette stitch and ribbing variations form the foundation of the construction.
Materials and Specifications
The recommended yarn for this project is Harrisville Daylights, a DK weight yarn composed of 85% Cormo Wool and 15% wool, offering a blend of softness and durability. The yardage requirements vary by size: Size A requires 886 yards (4 skeins), while Size H requires 1,658 yards (7 skeins). Each skein contains 250 yards per 100 grams.
The pattern calls for two needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and fabric characteristics. US 8 (5.00 mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches in length are used for the main body construction, with DPNs available as an alternative for small circumference knitting. US 9 (5.50 mm) circular needles of the same length are also required, likely for ribbed sections or cuff work. A spare circular needle is needed for the three-needle bind-off finishing technique. The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 32 rounds over 4 inches in the primary stitch pattern, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
