Product Description
Meet our totally adorable Red Panda Cub. He's cute, cuddly and ready for you to knit her up.
While our Red Panda Cub is rated as an intermediate pattern, she's really not too difficult for an advanced beginner looking for a challenge. Go slow, be patient and remember to have fun. :)
You will need approximately 30 m of medium weight rust red yarn, 62 m of medium weight dark brown yarn and 12 m of medium weight cream yarn. With these yarns use 4 mm (US size 6) needles. You will also need stuffing (we use ecofil or wool), a small amount of black yarn for the eyes nose and mouth and a tapestry needle to sew your red panda cub together.
Use the yarn we suggest, or any yarn you like. This pattern scales easily, so any thickness of yarn works beautifully.
Red Panda Cub Knitted Toy by Two Sisters Teddy Bear Co.
What Is Being Made
The Red Panda Cub is a stuffed knitted toy designed by Two Sisters Teddy Bear Co. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a three-dimensional plush animal suitable for display or play. The pattern encourages customization, allowing knitters to choose their own color schemes while maintaining the recognizable red panda form.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques that go beyond basic stitch work. The Red Panda Cub is knit flat on straight needles rather than in the round, meaning pieces are created as flat panels that are later assembled. Short rows are utilized throughout the pattern to create shaping and dimension in the toy's body and features. The completed flat pieces are then sewn together using the mattress stitch, a professional seaming technique that creates nearly invisible joins and is ideal for stuffed toys where structural integrity matters.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The pattern assumes knitters already understand basic knitting stitches and standard knitting terminology. While specific stitch counts and row instructions are contained within the full pattern document, the construction relies on fundamental knit and purl stitches combined with the shaping techniques mentioned. A glossary of all terms used in the pattern is provided at the end of the PDF for reference. The mattress stitch seaming technique is essential for joining the flat-knit pieces into a three-dimensional toy.
Yarn and Needle Materials
The Red Panda Cub pattern offers exceptional flexibility in yarn choice. The design can be knitted using any weight of yarn, from fingering weight to bulky, with needle sizes adjusted accordingly. Two Sisters Teddy Bear Co. recommends using needles one or two sizes smaller than those typically called for by your chosen yarn weight. This sizing adjustment helps create a tighter, more durable fabric suitable for a stuffed toy that will hold its shape through stuffing and handling.
For color inspiration, the designers suggest using shades of rust, dark brown, and cream to achieve an authentic red panda appearance. However, the pattern explicitly encourages creative customization—knitters are invited to choose any colors they prefer. The key consideration is ensuring all yarns used in a single project are of similar weight, which maintains consistent shape and size throughout the finished toy and prevents distortion in the final form.
Skill Level and Pattern Suitability
This pattern is rated for intermediate knitters. Success requires comfort with basic stitches, familiarity with short-row shaping, and understanding of standard knitting abbreviations and terminology. The pattern is designed as a downloadable PDF, making it accessible for immediate use once purchased.
