Product Description

A baby/children's blanket made to represent hope after heartache, I designed this blanket for all those rainbow babies and the love and healing they bring into the world.

Designed with a unique “corner-to-corner”, quarter-circle design, the curve of the rainbow is crocheted right into the blanket. Plus, it is made with a stitch that leave little to no spaces for a warm crocheted fabric.

The blanket is about 38” wide X 50” long.

Rainbow Hope Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern

What is Being Made

The Rainbow Hope Baby Blanket is a colorful crochet baby blanket designed by Christine Naugle. This finished blanket measures 38 inches wide by 50 inches long, making it an ideal size for a newborn or infant. The blanket features a rainbow color progression that creates a cheerful, hopeful aesthetic perfect for nurseries or as a thoughtful handmade gift.

Craft and Project Type

This is a crochet project classified as intermediate difficulty, suitable for crafters with some experience beyond basic crochet fundamentals. The project falls within the blankets and throws category, offering a substantial make that combines colorwork with structured stitch techniques.

Crochet Stitches Used

The Rainbow Hope Blanket incorporates several essential crochet stitches to create its structure and texture:

  • Linked Double Crochet (Ldc) – A foundational stitch used throughout the blanket body that creates a more defined, structured fabric
  • Double Crochet (Dc) – A versatile stitch providing height and drape to the blanket
  • Linked Half Double Crochet (LHdc) – Used to create variation in stitch height and texture
  • Half Double Crochet (Hdc) – Offers a medium height between single and double crochet
  • Single Crochet (Sc) – Provides a tight, dense stitch often used for finishing edges
  • Chain (Ch) – The foundation stitch for starting rows and creating openwork
  • Slip Stitch (Slst) – Used for joining rounds and finishing transitions

Techniques and Construction

The pattern employs linked stitches as a primary technique, which creates a more polished, professional appearance compared to standard crochet stitches. The linked double crochet and linked half double crochet techniques are central to the blanket's construction, with video tutorials provided to guide crafters through these specialized methods. The blanket is worked in rows, allowing for controlled color changes and a structured rectangular shape. The gauge is critical for this project: 14 linked double crochet stitches by 8 rows should measure 4 inches wide by 4¼ inches high when worked with a size J hook.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Rainbow Hope Blanket requires approximately 2200 yards of worsted weight yarn (#4) in total. The sample shown was created using Lion Brand Basic Stitch Yarn, with 360 yards (equivalent to 2 skeins) used for each of six colors: White, Baby Blue, Frost, Lemonade, Peachy, and Baby Pink. This color palette creates a soft, pastel rainbow effect.

Tools and Notions

To complete this project, crafters will need the following tools:

  • Crochet Hook Size J (6.00 mm) – for the main blanket body

  • Stitch Markers – for tracking pattern repeats and color changes
  • Yarn Needle – for weaving in ends and seaming if needed
