Worked up nice and the pattern was easy to follow. I should have gone a size down on the pattern as it was a bit big for my granddaughter. I added elastic on the inside around the waist to bring it in a little but the sleeves were still long. Over all I was quite pleased.

Rainbow Drops Cardigan by Baby Crochet Designs
What is Being Made
The Rainbow Drops Cardigan is a cute baby cardigan designed for newborns through 4-year-olds. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a top-down, one-piece garment featuring a charming rainbow drops design. The cardigan is sized to fit chest measurements ranging from 14 inches (newborn) to 24 inches (3-4 years), with corresponding sleeve and body lengths appropriate for each age group. The garment is fastened with 5-6 buttons, making it practical for dressing babies and toddlers.
Techniques Used
The Rainbow Drops Cardigan is worked from the top down in a single continuous piece, a construction method that minimizes seaming and creates a seamless fit. The pattern alternates between rounds of double crochet stitches and rounds combining chains and single crochet stitches to create the distinctive rainbow drops effect. This technique-based approach allows the colorful design to emerge organically as you work upward from the shoulders to the hem. The pattern uses a corner stitch construction defined as three double crochet stitches, a chain-2 space, and three more double crochet stitches worked into the same stitch, which adds decorative shaping and structure to the garment.
Stitches Used
The Rainbow Drops Cardigan pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches suitable for an intermediate skill level:
- Single Crochet (sc): Used in alternating rounds to create texture and definition
- Half Double Crochet (hdc): Incorporated for medium height and fabric structure
- Double Crochet (dc): The primary stitch used in foundation rounds, providing the base fabric and allowing the rainbow drops pattern to develop
- Chain (ch): Used to create spaces and transitions between stitch rounds
- Slip Stitch (slst): Joins rounds and secures stitches
- Decrease (dec): Crochet two stitches together to shape the garment and adjust sizing
- Corner Stitch: A decorative element combining double crochet and chain stitches for added visual interest
Materials Required
The Rainbow Drops Cardigan is designed to be worked with DK weight yarn (weight 3), a lightweight yarn that creates a soft, drape-friendly fabric ideal for babies and young children. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 240 metres for newborn sizing up to 550 metres for the 3-4 years size. You will need both a 3mm crochet hook and a 4mm crochet hook to accommodate different stitch rounds and achieve proper gauge. The pattern calls for 5-6 buttons (sized 15-20mm) for the front closure. The pattern is written in English using US crochet terminology with helpful abbreviations, and includes UK term conversions for international crocheters, making it accessible to a wide audience.
Pattern Overview
Described as quick and easy to work up despite its intermediate difficulty rating, the Rainbow Drops Cardigan combines straightforward stitch work with a charming visual design. The one-piece construction from the top down means you build the cardigan in logical progression, starting at the neckline and working down through the body and sleeves simultaneously. This method allows for easy adjustments to fit and eliminates the need for seaming, making it an efficient project for crafters looking to create a special handmade gift for babies and toddlers. The pattern is presented as a downloadable PDF, allowing immediate access to begin your project.
