Product Description

This written crochet pattern (in US terms) provides instructions to make three different designs of rainbow baby beanies (1. White Beanie with Rainbow Hearts, 2. Rainbow Beanie with White Heart, and 3. Rainbow Beanie with Earflaps), in both 'newborn' size and 'baby' size (please note: sizes are only a guide; individual head size may vary).

They work up quickly, making a gorgeous gift for any baby, boy or girl, and extra special for a rainbow baby - if gifting to parents of a rainbow baby, you may want to consider enclosing a special message (see second photo for example).

The pattern calls for white, as well as seven different yarn colours, to create a rainbow effect (a shade of dusty pink, pale orange, pale yellow, mint green, turquoise, pale blue, and lilac).

The only additional material required is a darning needle, with which to weave in the ends.

(If you have quite a tight crochet tension, I would suggest using a hook that is .5 mm larger, in order to obtain a similar gaug

What is Being Made

Rainbow Baby Beanies are colorful crocheted hats designed for infants and babies. This pattern creates charming beanies featuring a rainbow color progression that makes them visually striking and perfect for gift-giving or personal use. The design combines a white base with multiple vibrant DK yarn colors to achieve the rainbow effect, making each beanie a unique and cheerful accessory.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. Crochet is an accessible fiber craft that uses a single hook to create loops and interlocking stitches, making it ideal for beginners. The pattern is classified as beginner difficulty, meaning it is suitable for those new to crochet or looking for a straightforward project that builds foundational skills without complex shaping or advanced techniques.

Stitches Used

The Rainbow Baby Beanies pattern employs several essential crochet stitches to construct the finished hat:

  • Magic Ring (MR): A technique for starting projects in the round, creating a tight center point ideal for hat crowns
  • Chain Stitch (ch): The foundation stitch used to create base chains and transition rows
  • Double Crochet (dc): A versatile mid-height stitch that forms the primary fabric of the beanie
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc): A stitch shorter than double crochet, used for varied texture and fit
  • Slip Stitch (sl st): Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between color changes
  • Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc): A textured stitch that works around the post of the previous row, adding dimensional detail
  • Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc): Works behind the post of previous stitches, creating ribbed or textured effects
  • Increase (inc): Techniques to add stitches and expand the hat's circumference as needed

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Rainbow Baby Beanies pattern calls for DK (Double Knitting) weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category that produces a fabric with excellent drape and softness ideal for baby garments. The pattern specifies the following materials:

  • White DK yarn for the base color (the pattern references Lollipop Double Knitting in White as an example)
  • Multiple DK yarn colors in various shades to create the rainbow effect, including dusty pink, yellow (Lemon), mint green, aqua, blue (Wintersky), and purple (Crocus). The pattern lists specific yarn brands used by the designer, including Lollipop Double Knitting, Sirdar Snuggly Double Knitting, and Elle Family Knit Classic Double Knit
  • G (4.00 mm) crochet hook: The appropriate hook size for DK weight yarn, ensuring proper stitch definition and fabric consistency
  • Darning needle: Used for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the completed beanie
