Product Description
This pattern is a great way to use that special skein of handspun or luxury yarn in a project that you can show off whenever there is a chill in the air.
The Quinta cowl is great for that lightly spun 2-ply yarn that you just can’t live without but you don’t know what to do with. A lightly spun 2-ply doesn’t have the body to create deep stitch definition, but it wants to be more than plain garter stitch. By using twisted stitches in this lace pattern, you can make a more dramatic statement. And if you use a springy 3-ply, the twisted stitches will make the texture pop even more.
The cowl is made with a lace pattern that uses twisted knit stitches, yarn overs, twisted decrease stitches, double decreases, and bobbles. All unusual decreases are described in the pattern. The cowl is cast on along the circumference edge and joined to work in the round.
Quinta Cowl by Amy Maceyko
Project Overview
The Quinta Cowl is a knitted cowl pattern designed to showcase luxury and handspun yarns. This intermediate-level design is specifically engineered to work beautifully with lightly spun 2-ply yarn, which typically lacks the body needed for deep stitch definition in simpler patterns. By incorporating twisted stitches within a lace framework, the Quinta Cowl creates dramatic visual interest and texture that elevates special yarn choices into a wearable, show-stopping accessory. The pattern is equally effective when worked in springy 3-ply yarn, where the twisted stitches create pronounced texture and dimension.
What You Will Make
You will create a cowl—a circular neck accessory that can be worn looped around the neck for warmth and style. The finished cowl measures 8 inches (20.25 cm) in circumference. This is an ideal project for knitters who want to feature a special skein of yarn without committing to a large garment.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Quinta Cowl employs several intermediate knitting techniques that work together to create texture and visual appeal:
- Lace Pattern: The foundation of the design uses a lace pattern that creates openwork and delicate holes throughout the fabric.
- Twisted Knit Stitches: These stitches are worked by entering the stitch from a non-standard direction, creating a subtle spiral effect that adds dimension to the fabric.
- Yarn Overs: These create the characteristic holes and airy quality of the lace pattern.
- Twisted Decrease Stitches: Decreases worked with a twist add visual interest and help shape the lace pattern while maintaining the twisted aesthetic.
- Double Decreases: These techniques reduce two stitches at once and are fully explained within the pattern instructions.
- Bobbles: Textured embellishments that add three-dimensional interest to the cowl surface.
Construction Method
The cowl is cast on along the circumference edge and then joined to work in the round. This construction method means you will be working circularly from the start, creating a seamless, tubular fabric that requires no seaming.
Gauge and Finished Measurements
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 21 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in the lace pattern, measured after blocking. The finished cowl measures 8 inches (20.25 centimeters) in circumference.
Required Skills
This is an intermediate-level pattern. Knitters should be comfortable with lace knitting, twisted stitches, and various decrease techniques. All unusual decreases are described in detail within the pattern, making it accessible to intermediate knitters who may not be familiar with every variation.
Yarn and Needles
The Quinta Cowl is designed to work with luxury and handspun yarns, particularly lightly spun 2-ply yarn. The pattern also works beautifully with springy 3-ply yarn. You will need needles sized appropriately to achieve the specified gauge of 21 stitches over 4 inches (10 centimeters).
