Product Description

There are four versions of this hat in this pattern and five sizes for each! This gender non-specific hat mimics the hot air balloons flying over Lake Alta in Queenstown, New Zealand. Travel is a huge inspiration, and I never know how it will reveal itself. The youthful, exuberant, and inclusive vibe of Queenstown came out as a hat for everyone.

Choose your yarn, and enjoy making this one — you will likely get asked to make more than one. The hat is shown in 4 different yarns, with slight variations in fit and shape.

This hat is ideal for yarn substitution!

Cashgora reveals a flat, draping fabric, while Targhee Sock from Oink Pigments is a cushy superwash. It Could Be Worsted is a 50/50 Merino & Tussah silk blend that drapes. Dottie is a superwash merino blend with slubs. All these yarns can be substituted and I give substitution notes with each pattern.

Queenstown Hats by Jill Wolcott

Project Overview

The Queenstown Hats are gender non-specific knitted hats designed by Jill Wolcott, inspired by the hot air balloons that fly over Lake Alta in Queenstown, New Zealand. This downloadable knitting pattern captures the youthful, exuberant, and inclusive spirit of the travel destination, creating a versatile hat suitable for everyone. The design is moderately easy to execute, making it accessible to intermediate knitters while remaining engaging for more experienced crafters.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a finished hat that reflects the aesthetic of Queenstown's iconic hot air balloon scene. The hat is designed to be gender-neutral and universally wearable, with the potential to become a popular handmade gift—many makers find themselves creating multiple versions once they complete their first one.

Knitting Techniques

The Queenstown Hats pattern employs standard hat construction techniques suitable for intermediate knitters. The pattern demonstrates how different yarn choices and fiber content can subtly alter the finished hat's fit, drape, and overall appearance, providing valuable insight into yarn substitution and fiber behavior.

Yarn and Material Options

This pattern is designed to work with multiple yarn weights, including 3-ply, 4-ply, and worsted weight options. The pattern samples showcase four distinct yarn variations:

  • Cashgora — produces a flat, draping fabric with elegant flow
  • Targhee Sock from Oink Pigments — a cushy superwash yarn offering comfort and durability
  • It Could Be Worsted — a 50/50 Merino and Tussah silk blend that provides graceful drape
  • Dottie — a superwash merino blend featuring slubs for added texture and visual interest

The pattern includes substitution notes for each yarn sample, allowing knitters to adapt the design to their preferred fiber content and weight while maintaining the intended aesthetic.

Difficulty Level

Rated as moderately easy and suitable for intermediate knitters, the Queenstown Hats pattern balances accessibility with creative interest, making it an ideal project for those with foundational knitting skills who wish to explore yarn substitution and its effects on finished garment characteristics.
